RIP: Chuck Mangione | The Boneyard

RIP: Chuck Mangione

I honestly can't think of one person in my dorm who had it. We were George Benson fans with a little John Klemmer thrown in for those seduction nights.

RIP Chuck.
I didn't know anyone who didn't. Including the deadheads.

Chuck was introduced to me by a couple of upstate NY guys I met freshman year in college, one from Buffalo the other from Rochester, and both trumpet players in HS. His music was a staple of college and med school. The kind of music to relax and lift your soul in the evening. Immediately put on a Mangione playlist working in my office this morning.

RIP.

Our deadheads were Steely Dan fans.
Then they would love the tribute band Steely Dead. I saw them in Boca last year and they are on tour this year. Nothing in CT but in Brooklyn in October.

I was the huge Steely Dan fan at Wright B and took much abuse in 76. I did learn to enjoy The Dead thanks to UConn.

I think the album everyone had was "Frampton Comes Alive!"
I listened to a new band last weekend. Nice surprise to hear “Lines on My Face” and also Trower’s “Too Rolling Stoned”. I’ve never heard a local band do Frampton and they did it well.

"Bob Mayo on keyboards, Bob Mayo." Who could forget that intro from "Do You Feel Like We Do?". Bob Mayo passed away over 20 years ago.

You might want to watch the 1997 version of Ringo's All-Starr Band.

Ringo - drums and the least interesting parts of the show
Frampton - guitar/vocals (Dave Mason was supposed to be on this tour but had "creative differences". Thank God for that.)
Jack Bruce - bass/piano
Gary Brooker - piano/organ/vocals
Simon Kirke - drums/vocals
Mark Rivera - everything else

Frampton and Bruce stole the show on Cream and Procol Harum hits and DYFLWD and appeared to be having an absolute blast doing so. Brooker did Bob Mayo justice.

It got to the point where I was like, "Dammit, another crappy Ringo song", to kill what was otherwise an amazing show.

Very nice. I’ve seen Frampton a few times including in 76. I was fortunate to see Cream in a one-off at MSG in early 2000’s. No Humble Pie tunes? Ringo has had some great musicians in his All Star shows.

BTW, Steely Dead will be at Thunderbird Cafe in Pittsburgh on January 3rd, 2026.

I lived in Rochester for a bit in the early 90's and have a vague remembrance of his association with the city.

He had a close relative- brother or cousin, who taught at St. Joe's in Rockville in the 80's, who was my fifth-grade teacher.
