If you haven't already, I recommend watching the documentary on his life, Still Bill. It talks about his time in the US Navy and then his retreat into private life in the Hollywood Hills. There's a hilarious anecdote about him going to a dinner and overhearing some women in the next table talk about 'whatever happened to Bill Withers??' He introduced himself and they flatly dismissed him as a phony.

He will be missed greatly but his music will live on forever especially now in these trying times. I remember ESPN did a segment on him punking the USC team which was actually his idea. RIP to a legend.
