What a career! What a man! He was one of my all time favorites.

"Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated." -Arnold Palmer

He did live a full life, and was the first golfer to really bring the non-golfing world into the sport, somewhat because of TV but really because of his amazingly heroic back-nine charges.

But my favorite Arnie moment wasn't on the links. He was on Johnny Carson, and wasn't a very good interview. Johnny was getting a little bored as Arnie was explaining his pre-game ritual. When he said that his wife, Winnie, always took care of his equipment, including washing his balls, Johnny perked up, exclaiming, "I bet that gets a rise out of your putter." Arnie, very proud of his wife, glared back at Carson.

I saw him at the old ICO innWethersfield. He was in the next to last group and we followed him on and off. He was playing with a relative unknown. If Arnie hit first or finished first, he frequently turned to the crowd and reminded them to extend the same quiet and courtesy to his playing partner as they did to him. He and Ray Floyd my favorites to watch.

I was a huge fan, partly because of his charisma and style of play and partly because my mother's family came from Western Pennsylvania. He probably had more impact on his sport than any other athlete had on his or hers. In golf, there is only one King. RIP, Arnold! You will be missed.

.-.
I am a avid golfer. I loved the man and how he handled his life. A true American Icon. It is a sad day for the golf world. He was one of the Greatest Golfers ever and one of the Greatest People ever. God Bless Arnie.
