OT: - Rick Stansbury to Memphis | The Boneyard

OT: Rick Stansbury to Memphis

Odd hiring. It's not like they need better talent or a better xo's guy than Larry Brown whose already on the staff.

They are doing everything not to fire Penny.

Hardaway became the model for AD's looking for easy answers.
Hire an inexperienced former NBA star, and sit back watch the wins and league titles and NCAA championships pile up.
Like at Michigan...........

That reads like a Boneyard post circa Jan/Feb 2023.

We didn't have the wins, sure, but we also weren't finishing 2-5th in the freakin' AAC and paying millions to get kids just to show up to our commuter school.

Stansbury isn't a good coach. He's the only coach in Western Kentucky's history not to get to an NCAA tournament.

Memphis is the most corrupt program - possibly in basketball history - and they're not afraid to flaunt it for everyone to see. And yet, they've accomplished absolutely nothing.

At least everyone knows what they are and not like Rick Barnes or Pearl or Nate Oats who feign like they are these strong men of faith but totally corrupt morally.

I don’t think Oats is corrupted in the same way Pearl or Penny are with having bagmen (although now it’s legal). He’s just a moron who doesn’t care what his players do as long as they win games

Memphis did win the NIT in 2021
They lost to FF Houston by 2 in the AAC finals
2022 they lost to Houston again
In the AAC but made the NCAA
They beat Boise State in the NCAA opener then lost to number 1 . (They must have been 8-9 seed ) Gonzaga in the second round. The AAC seeding was always a bone of contention. We got screwed in 2016
They lost 66-65 to FF Florida Atlantic in the first round in 2023. Bad luck
However they finally won the AAC tournament 2023 beating a short handed Houston team
For most schools their record is pretty darn good but at Memphis their expectations are a little higher than most . Sound familiar.

Genuinely amazing the kinds of funds Memphis is willing and able to throw at players, for so little payoff.

In 5 years, he's won a single NCAAT game and never won the conference tournament or regular season.
And before this post season run the difference between that record and Dan Hurley’s?And Memphis did win the AAC tournament this season and lost to FAU by 1 pt in the dance. Sure the NC sets Dan Hurley ahead of Penny but before the 2023 NCAA there was little separation. Penny is not the coach many thought he would be and I feel he would be better suited for the NBA.
This hire is definitely head scratching
