Lagow was ten toes in, got thrown a curveball, and ultimately stuck with his commitment. We were Boyle's back up plan. I'm hoping whoever starts ends up all conference, all American, etc. etc. But if I had to pick one to root for, it would be Lagow.
I don't see it the same as you, and that's alright. I don't have a horse inis race other than the best player plays. At the end of the day, I want them to compete on the field and let the chips fall where they may.
When you think about it. Tim Boyle was also thrown a curveball when Coach Spaziani was fired. He took a step back, looked at his options, and found (what he hopes is) a better situation than B.C.'s new offense. A verbal is not binding and it's not like he forced UConn to give him a scholarship. UConn was a willing partner.
I think Richard Lagow did the exact same thing. He took a step back and weighed his options and that's a perfectly acceptable course of action. Ultimately he decided on UConn. (I believe he had at least passing interest from West Virginia, North Texas, and Arizona). That said, I don't think any more or less of either Boyle or Lagow because of what happened leading up to the first Wednesday in February. Remember, Mr. Lagow stated that Richard did not need a football scholarship to attend college.
Prior to NLI day, the player has most, if not all, of the leverage and it reverts to the school after the fax is sent. On the other hand, the school has to be able to cover themselves, given the non-binding nature of the verbal commitment. The real curveball was Kivon Taylor, not Boyle.
