IRVING — Plano quarterback Richard Lagow completed only one pass in the second half, but what a big one it turned out to be.
The University of Connecticut pledge converted a crucial third down on the winning drive and did the scoring honors himself in Plano’s 27-20 victory over Irving MacArthur Friday night at Irving Schools Stadium.
Lagow keyed the drive with a 13-yard completion to Mitchell Hansen to convert a vital third-and-11 at the MacArthur 27.
“I knew after that play the game was over,” Lagow said. “I knew we would do what we needed to do to finish the game. We’re not going to throw the ball much, at least that’s what it seems like, but we’re going to do whatever it takes to win.”
Lagow’s touchdown run on a sneak from the 1, his second of the night, came with 1:49 remaining.
Plano (2-0), No. 19 in SportsDayHS area 5A rankings, drove 54 yards in 10 plays to break a 20-20 deadlock.
Unranked MacArthur (1-1) got the ball back one more time with 1:48 remaining and a timeout to work with, but a misplayed kickoff strapped the Cardinals with poor field position they couldn’t overcome.
Plano tied the score three minutes into the fourth quarter on a 26-yard field goal by Jourdan Escobar, his second of the game.
The second field goal of the game by MacArthur kicker Jacob Rivas midway in the third period snapped a 17-17 halftime score.
Rivas tied it with a 25-yard field goal on the final play of the first half.
MacArthur’s defense limited Plano to 16 yards in the third period.
Plano capitalized on the only MacArthur turnover of the half, an interception by Grant Lyness, to set up a 28-yard touchdown run by Andre Morman for a 17-14 Plano lead.
Morman rushed for 173 yards on 17 carries.
Jourdan McNeill and Sebastian Taylor had touchdown runs for MacArthur.
Taylor, a transfer from Richland, threw for 246 yards and McNeill rushed for 145.

Congrats to Richard and the Plano Wildcats!

I wonder why they're not throwing much? Seems like the 7v7 state champs ought to have some weapons.

They didnt throw much in the game because the wind was pretty strong. They threw the ball 9 times and he completed two passes so they just abandoned the pass. He did a good job of managing the game and willing his team to a win with his leadership.
