Some good stuff here...

(Geno) "… We go into a press conference after we lose it’s like people are expecting you to describe how you feel about the Kennedy Assassination. It’s like so mind-boggling and so unacceptable. It’s so un-understandable that you almost have to sit there and go, `Guys let’s get a grip.’ So I think my team feels the same way. It’s like when we don’t win a game there’s this like utter disbelief that something like that could possibly happen"

“Kelly is usually not that talkative, but now she’s seeing that we need that from her,’’ freshman Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis said. “We need her to tell us when we are doing things wrong. We need her to tell us when things just aren’t going right for our team. And she’s been doing that a lot lately for us. And I think that us seeing Kelly say something and actually open up to us is telling us, `Dang, we’ve got to change. We’ve got to fix ourselves.’’’

Music to my ears.

that was some amazing stuff. but is anyone else wondering why some of that's not coming from Tiff (the senior) or Caroline, the PG? i think there are very few players as incredibly intense as Kelly, and maybe her pure passion is what is driving her to be more a leader than Caroline or Tiff, but i always got the feeling Caroline was a pretty intense individual too.

i'm not criticizing, of course - just wondering. anyway, Geno's comments were spectacular. and Kelly is showing why she's one of the most important players on the team - i think her and Bria are right at the very top for what the bring and what they accomplish every single game.

I think Caroline is having an internal struggle. How can she lead when she can't produce? That has to be going through her mind.

Bria's talked about it, she wants to be a leader. Geno says she's the only player that talks during games. I think she'll grow into that role, but right now, it's just plain unfair to ask that of her. Against ND she led the team in points and assists, was second in rebounds, and was defending Diggins. And she's supposed to be the team leader? That shouldn't be her job yet.

Kelly's the obvious choice. And I'm glad she's stepping up. She's probably sick of losing in Indiana.

Bingo for blackbird. I think Caroline's internal struggle adjusting to her new limits is dominating much of her energy.

Agreed. Tiff and Caroline both have some internal issues that are going to make it tough for them to lead. Caroline's just not producing at the level she's used to, especially in bigger games, and Tiff still gets too wound up in big moments. Bria needs to grow up just a little. I think she's almost there. Will be by the start of next season at the latest. But in the interim, a lot is going to fall on Kelly. I worry in the sense that it's not her comfort zone, but her work eithic and determination may allow her to do things she's not a natural at doing, especially once her teammates respond positively to it and reinforce her behavior.

College is a time to mature and change in all sorts of ways after all. This could end up being a change that'll serve her in incredibly good stead in many facets of her life going forward in addition to being a boon for this year's team.

I see Kelly as leader along the lines of Derek Jeter. Being a leader doesn't mean yelling and screaming! To be a leader , you must have the RESPECT of every player. Kelley leads by example , and with just a little more outward direction she may find it can be natural for her.

Appararently it was close to that in the locker room after the ND game.

Plus she is not on the floor enough to do it.

I don't agree. We need a vocative leader who can correct on the spot without Geno having to call a time out to do it. Plus, it can mean much more coming from another (experienced player) source.

I feel that among the things holding this team back is the talk that "We don't have Maya anymore." Players, fans, coaches have to get over this, and accept a new identity. Faris has taken a giant step. The mentality has to be: "We can do it.".....not, "Maybe we can do it." From what I have read, KML is pleading for someone like Kelly to guide her. Can you imagine the fire and spirit this team would have if just 2 more players stepped up like Kelly has?

interestingly it was Kelly who was trying to tell KML to go to the other side (the spot she should have been in) but KML wasnt listening lol

Players without fire rarely are able to hold others accountable. Often with that fire comes intensity and volume.
I don't think what you suggest is the only leadership vacuum the team is feeling right now.
