I am weary of posters who are expert practitioners of the art of
"damning with faint praise."
Signs of this are posters who, like this OP, begin their critique with "All very good, but. . . ." That "but" is the indicator that s/he is about to drop the hammer.
Some other well-honed techniques include:
- Begin the post with a short recitation of praise, followed by "having said that. . ." as a lead-in to a long recounting of the sins (turnovers, missed free throws, whatever) the subject player committed.
- The most common strategem is applied when disagreeing with a fellow poster. The sure signal that the critical (occasionally downright obstreperous) poster is about to let loose is the deceptive opening line: "With all due respect." Once you read those utterly insincere words, you better duck! Only abusive words, devoid of "respect," will follow.
Perhaps we need a new *abbreviation, DWFP, to use to identify situations like those I have described.
*Yes, DWFP is an abbreviation, not an acronym, because it is just a bunch of letters, each representing a word. Just like DNP in a box score for a player who stayed on the bench throughout a game. Acronyms create pronouncable words, like NATO, OPEC, seal, or scuba.
