Back in the late 80's as UConn was looking to build its program scheduling quality teams, Coach Auriemma inquired to add Penn State to their schedule, to which coach Rene Portland arrogantly declined, believing UConn to be totally unworthy. Coach Auriemma, then, called C. Vivian Stringer at Iowa requesting an invitation to her Thanksgiving tournament, the Amana Hawkeye Classic, to which Coach Stringer immediately agreed. UConn's first opponent in that tournament? Penn State, who UConn defeated 93-84 in overtime; a victory Coach Auriemma has long savored. He also has not forgotten the snub. Except for tournament play, UConn and Penn State have not met since 1983.
While technically a tournament, UCONN and Penn State played each other during the 2000 season in Orlando, Florida. It was the game where UCONN had to wear their practice uniforms because they brough the wrong ones.
