Not only is NBC reconsidering a BE offer, but ESPN is desperately trying to figure out how to unload the ACC contract.

I'm going with ESPN is paying Syracuse and Pitt to lose just to make BE look even worse.

You know what, I'm with HFD today. F cuse, F pitt, F ESPN, and I don't really care one way or another about Houston, SDSU or whoever. If they improve great. If they don't, I only care about UConn winning and whatever sheet a bunch of talking heads say about the be/nbe/nnbe, i say w/ever and maybe the huskies use that as motivation. Yeah yeah perception counts but f perception too.

Washington was preseason #27 in the AP poll. Only 3 PAC teams are ranked higher.

Yes preseason polls are not overly meaningful but clearly many think they're the 4th or 5th best team in the PAC.

And final was 21-12.

More importantly, SDSU showed a lot of character fighting back from Washington up 21-6 with the ball inside SDSU's end zone.

Grading the NNBE schools for week 1:

Boise State: B+/A- - replaced a ton of starters and had a lead against a Top 15 team on the road despite having previously turned the ball over on MSU's goal line. Boise is going to be very good again.

SDSU: B - not sure how a FBS program doesn't have a kicker at the end of training camp, but despite that handicap, SDSU put up a good fight against a Pac 12 team on the road. I was a little harsh on Washington earlier too, they should be middle of the pack in the Pac 12.

SMU: I - a win against Baylor would really help the perception battle.

Navy: D- - Navy looked like a high school team against Notre Dame, and Notre Dame isn't Alabama. The problem with a program like Navy is that it's upside is years where it can beat lower level BCS teams, and its downside is years like this one where it will get blown out by every decent team it plays.

Memphis: F - lost to a bad Tennessee-Martin team at home, including a late game collapse. This team just sucks in every way measurable. 0-12 is on the table for Memphis.

Houston: F- - sometimes you know from the first game or two a guy coaches that he is not cut out for the top spot. I could tell immediately with GRob, and it took Kragthorpe's first game against Kentucky for me to see he was not a big time coach. Levine has used all his mulligans for the next 3 years. Either he turns this around immediately or Houston may be better served firing him after one season and hiring Franchione. This wasn't supposed to be a rebuilding job.

Personally, I don't think it's bad to have a few weak teams in a league. Parity in the Big East really hurt the league's national image because often the champ seemed marginal top 25 material. Let a team go 11-2 or 12-1 or 13-0 once in a while, it's good for attention.

This. If we had to choose between a conference rife with parity or a conference where Boise St, UConn, Louisville and Cincinnati (just to throw out some names) are constantly in the upper echelon? The only thing is, you can't have too many "Memphis / Duke / Maryland / BC / Miami" type teams in the league. Then you become the Mountain West when it had TCU, Utah, Air Force and BYU.

By the way, nice win by Duke yesterday. Credit where it is due. I thought FIU was going to be a good team this year and Cristobal was going to be a hot commodity.

good post junglekusky. the same regurgitated nonsense about the BE has been going on for yrs, even when our "elite" teams were in the league & now gone. the conf now has a true leader who will fight for the league regardless of perception. the 1st wk results weren't what we hoped for, but it doesn't make a season. no one can see into the future so i'll remain optimistic. and like many of u pitt & cuse...my 2 cents

Houston wasn't supposed to be a rebuilding job??? They lost their NCAA passing leading QB and their top 3 wr... Those 4 are pretty big to lose. You take those away the starting qb and top 3 wr from pretty much any team and it's a rebuilding yr.

You weren't surprised that Houston got buried by Texas State? You should have let someone know ahead of time. It's only the 7th time since 1980 a team that was a 34 point or higher underdog won straight up.

A 34 point underdog winning their first game by 17 points on the road against a team who went 13-1 last year. Yes, I'd say the entire world is surprised.
Yes that was surprising, but Houston still isn't anything special this year. I'm talking more about Memphis, Navy, SDSU, the average at best teams. And possibly Boise State's worst team of the past ten years. (Basically a team that might only 9 games as opposed to running the table as usual.) I expect Boise St. and UCF to be the only teams this year to perform at a level to get us excited. Memphis, SMU, Navy, SDSU, Houston? Not expecting a whole lot.

Rebuilding or not, IT WAS TEXAS STATE! They were 34+ point favorites at home, and they didn't lose a nail biter, they got worked over by TEXAS STATE! You could maybe make the "rebuilding year" case if it was La Lafayette, UAB, La. Monroe or some other mid level Sun Belt team, but not TEXAS STATE.

Obviously you haven't seen what TSU did last yr by beating then #22 Stephen F Austin and #15 McNeese State both away games. So it's not like they dont have talent. Also when your qb goes 17 for 44 you have problems.

You left out UCF's big win.

The only thing that is discouraging for me is Houston.

We need Louisville to represent today, I'm not expecting a SMU win, but being competitive would be nice.

Boiseand Houston aren't what they were last year. The Houston result stinks nonetheless. However given the loss of a great QB Boise did a great job on the road. I'm still laughing at all the accolades given Cuse and Pitt "strengthening" the ACC. What a huge thud heard round the offices of ESPN. Boise will rebound because they have a coach who knows what he is doing. SDST should find a new one.

Boise lost more then their QB, they only had 5 returning starters as well as having to replace 3 coaches.

Memphis' inclusion alone prevents the Big East from being a major conference. They are hysterically bad, everything about them is hysterically bad, and there's no reason to think it'll ever change, at all.

Memphis wasn't brought into the BE for football but to please the basketball schools and offset the loss of both Syracuse and Pittsburgh. One good thing a travel to Memphis means going to Beale St which is always a plus

Gilbert really sucks so far. I could see Jones yanking him.

And Washington is not good. SDSU at least didn't embarrass themselves - but Washington is not a good team.

Gilbert is single-handedly killing SMU. He is missing wide open receivers, and threw a terrible pick on the Baylor goal line when a better pass would have cut the score to 14-10. While the score doesn't indicate it, SMU is not that bad.

Predict Washington's record.

Their over under was 7.5. Not beating LSU, Oregon or USC. Not losing to Portland State. So that's 2-3 on the known quantities.

They get Stanford, Oregon State and Utah at home. Give them 2-1 there. That's 4-4.

Arizona, Cal, Colorado and Washington State on the road. None of them are any good. 3-1 on the road maybe?

I'd guess 7-5, with 6-6 more likely than 8-4. They come off USC and Oregon and have to go to Arizona. Schedule is backloaded with road games.

That's not a bad team. I would give them 6-6 by the way, with a pretty tough schedule.

I said they were not good. I didn't say they were bad. They probably won't beat a good team all year.
