One of the classiest acts ever in baseball.

By the time I came of age as a baseball fan he was a Red.

25-9 in 1969. And 19-10 in 1973. A New York icon. And where else would one want to be an icon?

Wow. Tom Terrific.

Had a 15 year period where he had no-hitter stuff almost every game.

I posted already on the Mets thread, but this is a big one for me. Really my childhood hero.

The Summer of '69 was amazing. I was 13. Tom Terrific had all of the NYC Metro eating from his hand.

And screw Dick Young for forcing Seaver out of NY. Seaver should've never worn another uniform.

grew up 4.5 miles from Shea. Saved milk carton coupons for free upper deck seats. Waited outside the clubhouse one day, Tom came out and handed out Mr. Met cards that he signed - still have 2. was home sick the day he had 19Ks and fortuitously kept a score card which is also filed away. Carlton Fisk once said his favorite game was the day he caught Tom's 300th career win at Yankee Stadium. CitiField's address is 41 Seaver Way! RIP.

My first hero. Another 2020 slap in the face.

I didn't become a Mets fan until 1979 (age 11-12) so I missed the Mets years. The one thing that stuck with me about him was the way Hernandez talked about how he morphed later in his career when his arm got older and fastball lost steam. He was smarter than everyone he faced and knew exactly how to set them up and get them out.

My first sports hero and icon ever.

Sad so young. I didn’t know he was sick.

RIP

You might be interested in "After the Miracle", the book Art Shamsky wrote about the '69 Mets. He, Swoboda, Koosman and Harrelson (who also has dementia) traveled out to see Seaver after he was ill and the book covers that reunion among other things. There was a short a film as well, which I cannot find a link to anywhere.

Lewy body dementia. Horrible illness, thats what took my dad 7 years ago.

So sad, huge Mets fan but Seaver was before my time (38 years old) but def appreciate and understand how important he was and how dominant he was in his prime. Ironic he passed today when they beat the Orioles.

425/430 votes for the HOF on first ballot. Best ever at that time.

SNY has been great for the past hour or so. Lots of great call ins and incredible footage.

What a great human.

Tom had "nasty" stuff for a lot of years. A lot of the pitchers at that time utilized the "drop and drive" method, but none as good as he did.

Quick Tom story- my roommate at Pawtucket faced him in a spring training game in Winter Haven. My roomie said the first pitch was a spring training fastball that he hit about 400 feet, but it was foul. He said Tom looked at him like, who the hell are you kid? The next two pitches were knee high on the outside black for strikes at 95 mph. He said Tom just looked at him and grinned, like welcome to the big leagues kid.

It's almost ironic how Seaver pitched over 100 innings for the 1986 Red Sox. I remember him pitching a great 8 innings late in the year and kissing his wife on the way off the field. Then Bob Stanley blew the save.

Not flamboyant (thank God) as a great tv analyst.

Can you merge the 2 threads?

Wow, 1969 was THE year. 25-7. Went to Shea with my parents on a Tuesday night. Jenkins pitching for Cubs. I knew he had dementia. This makes me sad.
Cubbies is my favorite team and I also went to Shea that 1969 year to see the Mets and Cubs play
It was a day game in July - Seaver vs Holtzman and Cubbies lost 4-0 they couldn't touch Seaver that day
He was a terrific pitcher - Tom Terrific
I hate the Mets!!!!

Remembered he pitched 10 scoreles against the Padres and the Mets losing in 1971. Great year while losing double figures. RIP Tom Terrific.

Wow. Had no idea he had been ill. AL fan so did not see too much of him but he was a great power pitcher and a classy person. I enjoyed him very much as an announcer who did Yankee games as well as Mets. He had wit and great sense of humor, especially kidding Rizzuto. RIP Tom Terrific. Truly one of the Greats as a player and person and who was a great ambassador for baseball.

My favorite player
