Hate to even have to bring this up - but at the Air Force game - we were in the end zone meeting up by the 6 at halftime with friends (as we usually do) - and some people were using the memorial as a table to hold their beers. Politely, I say "hey - is this yours? not really appropriate to put your drink here"...and I'm met with EXPLITIVES multiple times. That guy went away and as we were going back to the seat another guy put a drink down there and I said the same thing and he told me to go F myself.

Both guys were UCONN fans.

Can we just be better than that? I know people are drunk and they may not always be paying attention, but if someone asks you to respect a memorial of a fallen player - we need to curse them out?

AITAH? Maybe I am...

You did the correct thing in my book showing respect and having the onions to express your point of view. But I’m an Old Guy and unfortunately respect for others is declining.

I respect you for expressing your opinion and agree with your sentiment; however, I understand why they responded the way they did.

I would understand it if I yelled or cursed at them. But I didn’t. So the responses were way out of line IMHO. But I don’t care about that really. I have thick skin. It is more about getting people not to do it. It is disrespectful.

You need the PA announcer's cell number. Let him do it for you.

It says a lot about who we are. When did dropping f bombs in response to a q become appropriate/acceptable?

I always worried that the rent was designed more as an outdoor bar than a fb stadium. But maybe that’s me. I remember vividly having to move seats while some guy hurled all over our section

Usually when people react like that it’s because they know damn well that they are doing something wrong.

Unfortunately it’s not just the Rent. I went to FSU when UConn baseball played them in Super Regionals in 2024. There was an idiot yelling F bombs until a FSU fan told him to lighten up. It’s not unique to The Rent or FSU. There will always be people who can’t handle their booze.

I'm 100 percent with you on this. Sadly this is the world we live in and it's only getting worse. If god forbid someone witnessed a hit and run at the rent of a pedestrian I bet 8 out of 10 cars would drive off with no care in the world so long they saved themselves 10 seconds.

What would you say the estimated age group was btw? I personally have never even thought of touching the JH memorial or taking a picture I don't even feel that's right but putting a beer on it that's as low class as it gets.

I was there at the same time and I was pissed but said nothing and moved on. I believe they were very drunk.

No, you did the right thing. Can't stand people like that. Would love to watch you stand on their loved ones grave and put a beer on it, then see how they respond. Bet they'd agree with you then.

I was in line in the rest room for the game and a lowd and repeated refrain of f..... Airforce went on the whole time. Obvisously the military academies deserve all the respect in the worlk, to say nothing of the fact that you have young children in the crowd.

Honestly, most of these folks need to realize they can't handle the sauce. I'm fine having the authorities escort them out and then ban them from the venue.

I hear you and agree with you. What I mean is I am not surprised they reacted the way they did. People don't like to be called out, even when they are undoubtedly wrong.

Thank you for stepping up. Unfortunately that happens all too often, and I’ve been cursed out for making them take them off it.

i have never been to the rent, but i'm familiar with the 6 statue from photos... it sounds like they should simply put a waist-high chain and 4 corner poles around it, forming a perfect square perimeter. I would have assumed something like that statue would have a safety perimeter around it, to avoid such instances.

Yes, and it would make it feel extra special and to be even more respected as well.

Jetskies,

Are you a local? If yes, I'll hook you up with tickets for one of next season's games.

The first guy was probably around 30.

The 2nd guy was in his 60s (which is way worse given that he probably understood the significance of the memorial).

I might be out of step here but the site might be the problem. It is basically in front of a refreshment area.

My guess that most folks do not know the story. And there is axiom know as the law of open surfaces -- that any open surface will eventually fill with stuff. It is just a good place to put your beer.

I would tend to give these guys a pass. I think it will continue to happen as long as the site and the height remain the same. Moving it to a location more fitting for memorial should, perhaps, be considered.
