I watched the Texas-West Virginia game. Looking at Goestenkors' face, I got the impression that this year has "aged" her tremendously. She looked drained and exhausted.
I thought so too. Clearly she has not gotten this group to perform as well as many think they are capable of, and knowing that she is clearly frustrated and disappointed.

I doubt much of that is true.
Agreed- sounds like a "let's coordinate our statements to the least detriment of everyone concerned," moment, which is how Texas likes to roll.

What exactly is the big deal re. Stafford? She's one of the top posts in the 2012 class, but she does not appear to be the kind of recruit that will have the kind of impact people seem to be implying.

Gail Goestenkors said today she is resigning because she's "tired," adding that her work with USA Basketball the past 10 years didn't allow her time off during the summers and "took its toll."

She said Texas AD Chris Plonsky tried to talk her out of her decision, but Goestenkors said she is "following her heart" on this move.

"Right now, I know I need a break from basketball," she said. "But I also have 100 percent belief in God and his plan for me. At this moment, I don't see myself coaching basketball, but if that's what God wants me to do, by God, that's what I'll do.

"I won't be employed by the university, but I will live in Austin. I'll be around as a fan. It meant the world to me that Jody Conradt wanted me to succeed her. I felt like I was a caretaker of this program. And I want it to be successful. So anything I can do to help the program, I'll do it."

She's not a game changing recruit, but she's a damn good one. She means more to Texas than to anyone else because their 2012 class sucks without her.

On another note...wonder if Vic Schaeffer feels dumb right now for taking the Miss State job? Think Texas gives him a call? I would.

Empress Davenport will be moving up. She was a find.

Stafford is important because she replaces the graduating Ashley Gayle. And she is a game-changer on the defensive end.

Texas has talent remaining, though loses a lot in the backcourt. If the younger players stay healthy, this team could be top three in the Big 12. But health has been a big "if." And, to be honest, there looked as if there were chemistry problems, as not all of the players seemed to gel with one another on the court.

I doubt it. I know Jemelle left to coach in the Big East, but does a longtime assistant typically leave to coach in the same conference? Tonya went to the Atlantic 10. Nikki Caldwell left to the PAC 10/12 for three years before coming back (and would not have, had it been another SEC school besides LSU). I just do not see the appeal of having to coach against your former mentor at least twice per year.

A&M and Texas aren't in the same conference anymore, for one. For that matter, Miss State and A&M now are.

For another, he's from Austin originally.

For a third, Texas as a job>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Miss State job. There aren't enough >s in the universe.

Another example was Coquese Washington leaving ND for the Big Ten and not the Big East.

there were definitely chemistry problems. That's why Texas needs more fresh bodies. I like Davenport as well, but without Stafford, that's only one body.

Thank you for that reminder, Alex. Completely forgot about A&M moving!

GG never proved to be a good fit for Texas. I just down think she had that "folksy" quality that parents in the state look for. And if you are in Texas you have to be able to recruit Texas.

Texas will be looking for someone with a national championship pedigree. Now is the time for wbb fans coast to coast to band together and lobby UT to hire National Champion Coach Carolyn Peck!

Peck: "She took Duke to a final 4 ... actually a couple of them ..."

Uh, no. She took them to FOUR.

"This place is not for the faint of heart." Was the AD pissed or merely acknowledging that GG made the right decision to fire herself, as she put it. When you cannot live up to expectations it does get tiring ....

GG had a panicked look during every game. Her expectations at Duke were only the ones that she brought on herself. I can tell you from growing up in Texas, UT does NOT tolerate underachievement without making a change and throwing some money at the change.

This should be a very interesting change. I would not be surprised to see them go after a WNBA coach, maybe San Antonio coach, Dan Hughes.

Well they have the rest of her contract which is a number that can attract a pile of coaches. She got out of Duke because she had had her best shot at it there and she knew it.
