Then why are there salary caps, limits on scholarships, efforts at every level to level the playing field and maintain a semblance of competitive balance?
Super teams do generate a lot of interest, that cannot be denied, but the game is propelled when ratings wealth is distributed.

It might still be true today, but back in the day, if you attended a Broadway show at which the star does not appear on short notice, you were afforded the opportunity to walk out and get reimbursed for your ticket. Same great show with a capable understudy, just without the transcendent big name star.

How so? Last year's NCAA ratings for both men's and women's grew last year. And on the men's side, parity was a key reason why the tournament was so exciting.

The start of this year's season has been much more exciting in its first couple weeks compared to last year. It's nice to have perennial favourites to an extent, but the "any given day" drama brings more casual fans to the game out of curiosity from my point of view.

It depends what you mean by “good” for the game. It may not be a function of ratings. The players’ experiences might be better with more parity even if the ratings slump.
