So with all of the off-season roster discussion, I've seen a lot of hand-wringing about bringing certain guys back who are "bad" defenders and therefore, we will stink next year on the defensive end.
We had a nice sample size of 8 games against teams that were "elite" KenPom offenses this past year...Top 15 offenses that averaged between 124.9-131.6 Adj Points per 100 possessions.
Per Hoop Explorer, here's what the did versus us:
These teams collectively put up and average of 97.1 Adj Pts/100 possessions.
Also, we performed at an elite offensive level, efficiency-wise, at 128.7 Adj Pts/100. Our assist % was 64.3%, Top 10 indexed to all D1 teams. Against elite opponents.
Areas we didn't do well with: Rebounding (we allowed 35.6% offensive rebounds), and fouling (43.7 FT rate).
Interesting stuff/good stuff:
We limited 3pt attempts (33.6% of all shots, basically bottom of barrel indexed to all D1 teams)
The teams did not take a lot of mid-range 2pt shots, but when the did, they made them at an above-average %
We let them get to the rim at a higher than average rate (42.6%), but they made these shots at a very low % (only 51.3%)
We severely disrupted offensive flow (very low assist rate, 40.4%, which was bottom-of-barrel indexed to all D1 teams)
While we do know that some players that may return have some flaws/limitations in their defense, I'm not gonna worry much. The numbers speak for themselves.
I'm pretty comfortable that Hines will provide as good rim protection as Tarris, maybe even better.
We can discuss our replacements for Alex when we get to that point.
Relax.
