Reibe in the portal

Too bad. I guess he's not willing to battle it out for center going forward.
When you are the heir apparent and lack the desire to want to fight for it, you’re probably not the right stuff for this program… just sayin. Wish him well and maybe he makes more $$ somewhere but he’s missing a chance to develop under the best

Feared this would happen… love Hurley but he didn’t use Reibe right you can tell he didn’t encourage his ability to stretch the floor & I believe it turned reibe off kids gotta lot of potential hate to see him go if he actually leaves

Reibe shot 4/13 from 3 and under 60 from the free throw line. He showed zero ability to stretch the floor here and was a total liability defensively. He played the exact amount that he should have . He absolutely has lots of potential and he’s choosing to leave the place that could have cultivated it the best, imo. We’ve been exceedingly fortunate that we really haven’t lost major pieces, until now, in the portal era.

The only thing I will say is that Reibe is never going to put up star numbers in this system. Heck, Castle didn't put up star numbers here - his pro numbers are better. That's the system. Reibe would have had the starting job next year but he would have been a third-fourth option scoring. Obviously this is not what he wanted.

Also, this was not a surprise to the staff.

I think the only way for him to have been content and for the fan base to be happy in outcomes was if Reibe could be athletic enough to play the 4, which he was not. He was not going to grow into a domineering Center and his inability to move around to spots on the floor made Karaban's look otherworldly.

This board is high comedy, wasn't a soul questioning why Hurley and Co recruited Reibe and how he didn't fit UConn's system when he played well against Arizona, Illinois, Kansas, Florida when Reed was hobbled/out. His play fell off and he became disengaged(whichever order you want to put first), but these "well, he never fit UConn's style of play" takes are nonsense.

We were 7 points from a national championship. Reibe looked like he mailed it in the last month. I think Hurley had it right.

I was hoping that perhaps he would engage Clingan this summer for some heavy coaching work to improve his offense and defense down low. I think he is being short sighted, but I wish him well.

We were a hair's breadth from winning a national title. Spare me.

Again Hurley didn’t lt him flourish he’s not clingan he a finesse style player his strongest contribution would been to maximize his ability to stretch the floor which would’ve add much more to this dynamic team opening opportunities for other to have clear lanes for cutting or drives as bigs jus played off him & sat in the lane … he was used incorrectly
We had enough of guys who thought they were stretching the floor this year with very mixed results.

I agree it was not a surprise, especially in light of Hurley’s recent tampering comments.

Castle and Newton had the best relationship. Both talented, unselfish team players with winning hearts. If it’s not just about money, then I think Reibe may be listening to people, who really don’t truly understand the American game. If that’s the case, I feel bad for him.

Looks who's on his list. Kentucky/Pope - 5 out. BYU - does some 5 out. Devries at Indiana.

Kid wants to play facing the basket. Not sure what Hurley promised him - was a bad fit out of the gates. My guess is that Hurley was looking to use him in a "change of pace" 5 out style, but then realized he was so bad at rebounding/defense it wasn't worth it.

Been a number of misses at the HS level of late, experimentation. Feels like needing to stick to what works.

Reibe backed up after starting the year as a key piece. He has talent but we didn't figure out how to keep him consistently producing.

Living in an alternate reality

He has more inside information than most people on this board
I wrote in a different thread that if Reibe is your starter next year, there would be no final four for us. What I couldn’t say because of the rules of this board is that it looked to me that he wasn’t a good match with what a #1 center is for US. He is a skilled player, but never will he be a ln Adama or DC or Bear. Not how God made him. And that is okay. He will be a pro. Just not what we need in a starting center.

Oriakhi parent vibes?

I think he “I’d like to see the German kid play a little more” or “the German big”.
Don’t recall saying he spoke to Hurley.
Sorry, but Calhoun was wrong. Did you see Bear play in the tourney? He played like an old time great. No comparison. Sorry Reibe. Wish you well.

Living in an alternate reality
You think a kid that hit the portal after one year who clearly wants to face the basket, who was known for facing the basket in HS, was a good fit? Poor senior year which recognized he lacked strength around the rim (rebounding/finishing), but talked about what nice touch he had from 3, was a good fit? You tell me what mold he falls into that has worked (Adama, Clingan, Tarris)? He had the worst defensive rating on the team this year on EvanMiya, a site that give bigs a major advantage in scoring. Koroma was worse, but he barely counts.

We have to react to what we see. You are right he looked great early. Also correct his play regressed in this calendar year.

He would be a great fit if he was on board next season in a two headed monster at center like we had all these other years, he wasn't on board. You're just regurgitating what Dauster said.

Schools on is list confirm that notion.

Confirm what notion?

Reibe played great for a freshman big when Tarris was hurt and slow to get back into form with his injury.

When his minutes became more up and down and Tarris got healthier/better that became a problem for him and he was checked out later in the season.

You were not ranting and raving about what a bad fit Reibe was and why did Hurley recruit him after the Arizona, Kansas, Illinois, and Florida games. Yes we know his game fell off of a cliff and his play became disengaged the last 1.5 months because his minutes were reduced playing behind one of the best bigs in the country, but to act like the Reibe we saw by the end of the year when it looked like he didn't even want to be out there is the same Reibe we saw early is complete nonsense.

That couldn’t be more inaccurate! Every single report states UCONN wanted Reibe back and were willing to pay him the going rate for a 5.

You dont fork out 3+ million in NIL to a player you dont want on your team.

What kind of character does a kid have when his play falls off a cliff when it matters most?

Is that the report? Didn't see it.

Where are you getting the 3m from? For all we know, we offered him 1m and he took to the portal.

everything I have seen and read states Hurley wanted him back and were willing to pay him, pretty sure the video you posted yesterday they even said it as well

I do agree, he doesn’t fit the mold of our typically bruising 5 but in the beginning of the season tha kid was a major reason for our success

We need to pump the brakes a bit on these assessments, since kids develop over time. and they look like completely different players. Reibe actually has a bigger frame than some of the bigs who became physical forces for UConn in the last 30 years. Yes, I'm going way back, but Travis Knight, Jake Voskuhl, Hilton Armstrong, Josh Boone, Thabeet, heck even Gavin Edwards, they all came in and were not physical the way you want our centers to be.

Some took to their senior year to be serviceable (Nolan & Samson). Others we gave up hope on only to see them explode (Armstrong).

Very few plateaued early or didn't get much stronger (Brimah).

Sanogo and Clingan dominated in the 3rd and 2nd years respectively.

Reed transformed in the second half of this year.

That position needs patience and development. If he wanted to, Reibe could put on a lot of weight and muscle and hold down the fort. All it would take was a mean streak and some work.
