Reibe and Furphy at FIBA U19s

Siulepa is a heck of an athlete and is apparently a phenomenal rugby player but he has zero feel for the game. Pure wrecking ball player. His play works against less composed players but Germany may have the best non-American PF in the tournament. That and Germany putting their best defender on Furphy really killed Australia until Fennel started to become a third scorer for them which opened up some offense for Furphy. Anderson killed for Germany in his matchup with Australia's PGs.
Siulepa made the All Tournament second team, so being aggressive must be high on the list of valued traits.

Winner: Jacob Furphy will help UConn

No, Jacob Furphy is not related to fellow Australian Johnny Furphy, who played at Kansas and is now with the Indiana Pacers. Jacob Furphy is a lefty like Johnny, but he's got a more sturdy build and a crafty handle that helped him produce an impressive 24-point showing in a loss to the United States. While Furphy could face an uphill climb to carving out a significant role in UConn's Big East rotation as a freshman, he clearly looks capable of helping the Huskies over the long haul. He averaged 16.7 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 2.1 steals in the FIBA U19 World Cup. A rough final two games left Furphy shooting just 31.4% from 3-point range for the tournament, but there were numerous flashes of Furphy's elite marksmanship over Australia's first five games. He's exactly the type of skilled offensive player who will be maximized by a schematic guru like Dan Hurley.

He is a heck of an athlete, very aggressive and didn't slow down as the games went on but he lacks a fundamental understanding of how basketball is played. If he focused solely on basketball and had a good coach he would be a very good player, a bit like Sochan maybe.

Cap, yes they are 5th cousins and Jacob and Johnny didn't know until they talked. This was posted on the BY somewhat earlier.

Have we considered five bigs?

Hurley doesn't like 5x5 hockey substitutions, but dang he has a good 2nd line in Reibe, Furphy, Mullins, Smith and Karoma.

The staff has been looking for a 3rd big since we added Koroma so the staff knows it’s a potential hole in the roster
Every person claiming we don’t need another center will secretly be very relived once we land him.

The point is that anyone we land at this point is going to be 5th on the depth chart at the 5 spot, so won't make any difference on our season

By the time games started it had been a few days. Jet lag wasn't likely an issue.

I'm not worried about the conditioning. He probably isn't going to be asked to play 35 minutes anyway.

Key Factors That Affect Jet Lag Duration:

  1. Number of Time Zones Crossed:
    • More time zones = longer adjustment. Crossing more than 3–4 time zones typically causes noticeable jet lag.
    • Rule of thumb: it takes about 1 day per time zone crossed to fully adjust.
  2. Direction of Travel:
    • Eastward travel (e.g., LA → Europe): harder on the body; jet lag may last 5–7 days.
    • Westward travel (e.g., Europe → LA): generally easier; jet lag may last 2–4 days.
  3. Your Sleep Habits and Health:
    • Good sleep before your flight and healthy habits help reduce recovery time.
    • Older adults and people with irregular sleep patterns may experience more prolonged symptoms.
  4. Timing of Arrival:
    • Arriving in the morning and staying active during the day helps reset your internal clock faster.

Common Jet Lag Symptoms:

  • Insomnia or early waking
  • Daytime fatigue
  • Brain fog or irritability
  • Gastrointestinal issues

I think we're looking for someone who would be third on the depth chart, that's why we're being extra patient. I think it's more likely we don't add a center than add one that would be 5th at his only position, there's no point in that.

Thanks?

In theory that would be great. But anyone willing to accept being 3rd on the depth chart and get maybe 50 minutes all season is likely not better than Alex Karaban or Dwayne Koroma, so I just don't see it

Myself, I'm not claiming we don't need another center, I'm saying I'm not worried about it. The staff has it under control.

The Guard! It’s a great song.
I had to laugh at the down vote I just got. It was earned. I know the song “The Boxer” but with the thread being about Furphy and then the lines from the song The Boxer in the post I responded to I went for what seemed like it would be a humorous post. I was way too many beers in. Haha.

And I have to think UConn is going to love Furphy. I can’t wait to see him. There are too many guys with all the athletic ability that just don’t make enough of the right decisions and plays. Being basketball smart is a huge plus. #1 on that list is Nadav. He always made the right play.

Given that playing backup center is Koroma's role, I would suggest they are looking for a 4th big if they are still looking for bigs.
