There are some great articles from the Courant today and another linked on Nan's list from Springfield, MA and I just wanted to emphasize that article to the boneyard because I think it is REALLY important as it relates to future regional sites.
I am not sure who is working the publicity for the 'Women's Challenge' but assume the HOF which is sponsoring is involved. And what they have done is great! 3.5 weeks before the game they have a well written article hyping the tournament and telling people to mark the date in their calendars. This is an early enough advance so people can alter their schedules or actually plan ahead.
If they are smart, they will also make sure local newspapers publish at least a weekly update on the WCBB season with particular reference to the 8 teams scheduled to compete. I would throw in some profiles of teams and or players to add interest. Newspapers love free well written copy so if the HOF is on the ball they should be able to get as much printed as they can produce.
This is the kind of media campaign that can help build an audience and a full arena and it is starting not 5 days before but 25 days before. And I believe it is what the NCAA tournament committee is hoping to promote with fixed locations for regionals/finals.
No idea if the HOF and Springfield will really execute on the marketing, but todays article is a really good start.
And I am not sure what criteria the committee will be looking at and whether an 7700 seat arena will be large enough for their ambitions, but if Springfield can demonstrate a good marketing plan for this tournament (and succeed in getting a full arena) I think it is the ideal kind of venue. Small city with limited competition from other sports in a region that is pretty sports fanatic with decent access through BDL and highways. And a full 7,700 arena with scalpers looks better than a 14,000 seat venue with lots of empty sections.
