In going back to rewatch the game, specifically the 2nd half, I noticed something interesting trends. At the 14:00 minute mark in the 2nd half, Maryland picked up its 4th team foul. They later picked up their 5th team foul at the 10:00 minute mark. They didn't pick up their 6th team foul until 25 seconds or so were left in the game when they started fouling UConn intentionally. While this was all going on, UConn was called for 7 fouls.
Now, I really don't have a problem with a lot of the calls that went against Uconn during that time, because of the way the news rules are set up, Napier's joke technical foul not withstanding. Even Napier's 5th, while a bang bang play, was a block.
What I have a problem with, is watching Uconn get held on the offensive end by Maryland. Uconn did take a lot of jump shots during that stretch, but they also went to the basket enough times. With the new rules being in place, I find it very hard to believe a team could go almost 10 minutes without committing a foul, and almost 14 minutes with only committing one.
Is this the only reason Maryland was able to trim a 17 point deficit down to 1? No, UConn turned the ball over, missed shots, and didn't play great defense. But it certainly helped having a 28-13 advantage in FTs, especially with UConn only getting to the line 4 times in the 2nd half.
