Both can be true. Overall the refs weren't a problem this game. Only one call seemed questionable in person but I have yet to see the replay of it. The OOB at about 5:30 seemed out on Creighton from my seat. What did the TV coverage show, was that out on UConn? That killed all of UConn's momentum.

UConn also wasn't nearly as bad as you are making it out to be, or it would have been a double digit loss, not a one possession game with minutes to go.

Back to back possessions where they got CLEAR out of bounds calls wrong (plays happened right in front of refs too) when we were down 3 and had all the momentum… they go down and hit a 3 to go up 6 and it took the juice out of the building… did you see Karaban’s 3rd and 4th foul? Did you agree with both of those? Many other examples…

I hate this board when it comes to this… it’s as if only one thing can be true... Either the players lost the game OR refs cost us the game, couldn’t possibly be a combination of the two (with non-equal weightings to make this even more complicated!)…

Here’s a complex thought… it’s possible we played poorly and also had a number of calls that went against us that lowered the probability of us winning in a “meaningful enough to discuss as a topic” way… had we not gotten screwed on clear cut calls the game may have played out differently, we’ll never know (and not arguing it would have)… some of you almost act like you don’t deserve a fair shake from refs if you play poorly and others are just hardo enemies of any nuanced takes on the subject…

We agree, my response was to the original poster, and broadcast showed that both of the OOB calls that went against us in that sequence were CLEARLY off Creighton… meanwhile it was a 1 possession game late as you point out… but Creighton getting 2 extra possessions on something that’s not supposed to be a judgment call can’t be discussed as something that potentially could have affected the outcome apparently - airtight logic

Both Villanova 2 nights ago and Creighton last night plays defense on cutters and handoffs by grabbing the opponent, using sometimes both hands to keep contact and slow the movement. AK's two early second half fouls were of this type.

The uncalled moving screens, the contact on the way to the rim called so obviously one way, out of bounds calls without a care in the world if the call was right or not, made the game unenjoyable as a viewer.

The whole big east tournament including the DePaul / Creighton game which DePaul should have won but were robbed when Kalkbrenner hooked player on game typing shot (uncalled) made this tourney had to watch - including last night.

Unlike past years I have no interest in watching the title game tonight - I’m done!

This game was very similar to the Marquette game except Marquette bricked open 3s the entire game, and the refs weren’t as bad, so we won. They shot 13-17 from 2 in the first half of that game. Creighton shot 14-18 from 2 in the first half last night. We improved in the 2nd half both games.

This board has no ability to actually process what’s happening so winning = we’re good and losing = we’re bad, even though there‘s not much difference in how we played.

Fouls are subjective. Out of bounds calls are not. The second one, the more obvious one, was a six point swing that decided the game. The ref who called that should not ref the tournament again.

I only had a view from behind and from pretty high up. I have yet to watch the replay anywhere, so I wasn't sure if I was correct or not.

It looks worse for us because the league doesn’t care about freedom of movement and our offensive scheme is disproportionally impacted by that. That combo means the bear hugs on AK and Liam off-ball become the default defense from opposing coaches. It’s not a conspiracy, it’s just the ridiculous way this league chooses to call their games (and has been for a long time), which for some reason they continue to think is a differentiating part of the league culture.

100%. For the entire year, how many calls that even the TV guys say are bad calls, go against us vs. for us.? 95%??

Karaban had more fouls called on him in the first 3.5 min of the second half than Creighton had called on them for the entire game to the that point. Those two out of bounds calls were momentum killers.

I have never in my life seen a shot blocking center have so few fouls called as Kalk. We’ve had some of the best shot blockers in college basketball history and foul trouble was always a concern. kalk goes on multiple game stretches with zero fouls.

You know what the solution to your complex problem is? Play better basketball. If we’re don’t get down 17, and don’t let the other guys shoot 75% maybe the refs don’t matter. And there were a few calls not made on us that helped us get back. 1 I remember was Kalkbrenner getting absolutely mugged under the basket by 2 defenders. His shot went about 2 feet up because someone, I think Stewart, was hanging off his shooting hand. Missed the shot, we rebounded and scored.

Just accept that we played poorly for 25 minutes. Dug a huge hole we couldn’t get out of and lost a game we probably should have won. The refs didn’t miss 2 3 pointers that would have tied the game. The refs didn’t let Creighton grab a critical rebound after a miss. The refs didn’t fail to cover guys all night long.

4 FTA in 40 min after countless drives and contested shots at the rim. Atrocious close to first half, but two blown oob calls and nothing against Creighton, phantom calls on AK, etc tend to add up. But sure thing pal

I agree with some of this. The league loves its reputation as the Big Bad Big East. Heck Marshall brags about every time he does a game. Others do too. And it actually hurts the play. You watch other games and you realize that grabbing and clutching and bumping isn’t needed. It makes every game a rock fight.

Nope, they were horrid in both games. Sum it up this way - how do you keep Neal's dunk from blowing up like that ? It should have been a technical foul for the pullup on the rim . Do your damn job.

Yup. There were three drives at the end of the game, two by McNeeley, one by Karaban that all could have been called (and would have if it were Johnson or Reed)

Back to back wrong OB calls. Whether they would have changed the results much who knows. You’re supposed to play well enough to not let the refs impact a game. I’d say the awful defense and disjointed offense and a coach who doesn’t know how to develop an uber talented 5 into the core of his team are the bigger issues.

Our defense is apparently so bad that we actually improve players’ shooting ability. Really, we have a gigantic target on our backs every night which we weren’t prepared for and haven’t adjusted to. While we have good players at baseline, we are sorely missing a Spencer or Newton to right the ship in the moment.

The verticality rule is used or forgotten at will. Kalk gets the benefit 100% of the time. Meanwhile we’ve been called for dozens of fouls where we were perfectly vertical this season.

I’d be surprised if anyone could name a single unequivocally bad/missed call that went in our favor this season, but even if so, it wouldn’t come close to the 3-5 against us that you can name after almost every single game.

I will never understand the “you need to overcome the refs” stance as it pertains to not discussing them or not “whining.” You need to win a game by 1 point. Because the refs like the other coach or team better, or they’re incompetent, you need to effectively win by 3, 6, 10 points? While clearly you have to if you want to win, that just proves that they are a part of the game that are fair game to be discussed as part of the outcome.

How about #7 for Creighton, who marched right off the bench area onto the court and did it right where the situation happened?

There were three out of bounds calls that clearly went off Creighton in the game and the ball was awarded to Creighton all three times. There were no out of bounds plays that went off UConn and UConn was awarded the ball.

These weren't close calls that you needed replay on to know who it went off of, it was as clear as day they all went off Creighton. We survived the first of the back to back ones during our second half comeback. The second one was a backbreaker. We cut the lead to three points with a little over 6 minutes left. Ball clearly went off Creighton, they gave it to Creighton and Jamiya Neal went down the court and hit a three to make it a 6 point game.

We played terribly defensively for over 25 minutes and once again McDermott outcoached Hurley but the refs have hurt us all season in Big East play. Hurley can and should be blamed for putting together a highly flawed roster and a finesse roster in a physical league but clear holds should be called and guys put two arms around McNeeley constantly all season in conference without calls. I'm not excusing his recent play, he's been really bad but the guy never gets a whistle. Solo also gets held a lot.

Give Creighton their due. You deserve to win if you shoot like they did. Probably their A plus game. Not everyone hates UCONN. I'm a Syracuse guy and I am hoping you guys pull off a threepeat. Long odds but you are dancing while my team becomes increasingly irrelevant. We will rise from the ashes though. Just like UCONN did. I will also root for St. John's. Only team I abhor is G'Town. It is 9:47 and they still suck!
