Red Auerbach and Bill Russell on how to rebound

That must have been a "Red on Roundball" segment that Red Auerbach did back in the sixties or early seventies - they would air during NBA game telecasts. I had forgotten about them - anyone else remember?

I bet those were awesome segments. Red show the game in great detail. It was like the rest of folks were watching the game in color. Red was watching the game in High Def.

Great. Should be mandatory viewing and doing on the court by every player. Russell often said he got most of his rebounds before the shot was taken meaning position and the likely bounce of the ball. I think you could say this technique worked a little bit. He averaged 22.5 rebounds a game for his career.

You can see this merely by watching any highlights of Anessah Morrow, too. She boxes out low, effectively forcing an opponent to foul her “over the back” to rebound over her. Some players overdo the low box and end up getting called for submarining the player behind them.

Oh I remember them - great instruction and techniques by Red and the players he feautured in these videos. I have often wondered if any of them ever get shown to the UCONN players...?

If anybody ever accumulated a lot of knowledge about rebounding and shotblocking over the years, it was Bill Russell.

I remember them quite well. I seem to recall Red doing one with David Robinson in the 90's, so these segments stretched for decades. My favorite is the one he did with Calvin Murphy with Murphy opening the segment demonstrating his incredible baton twirling prowess.

This video is a pretty nice reminder that size doesn't necessarily matter...

There have been few athletes as gifted and talented as Calvin Murphy. Fast, quick, strong, dexterous, could jump through the ceiling, incredible ball handler, could shoot lights out from anywhere on the court, automatic from the free throw line, great court vision. One of a kind.
