This year there are three movies I am anxiously awaiting.

Disclosure (June)
The Odyssey (July)
Dune (December)

Any others?

I've been anxiously awaiting anything that would compel me to actually go to a theatre for several years now.

Meantime, whatever the next thing Jason Statham does that gets to streaming will do.

While I suffered through 30 minutes of trailers in the Cinema last week, a few things did appeal.

Elden Ring. Has some promise.
The Death of Robin Hood. Something different, good cast.
Disclosure Day. Getting a lot of press, Spielberg returns to aliens.
Avengers Doomsday. Zoo will cringe, but I'll definitely watch it.
Dune 3. Obviously
Hunger Games: Sunrise on Reaping. Streaming for me
The Odyssey. Obviously
Project Hail Mary. SciFi and not a sequel
Supergirl. She seems cool. Interested to see what they do.

A24 has a horror movie and some other things like Enemies that could be good.

Being a movie person looking forward to Doomsday is like being a food person looking for to McRib:)

Forgot about Project Hail Mary good one.

Disclosure Day may get me to a theater. Possibly even The Odyssey.

Ones I'll definitely stream:
Michael
The Rip
Primate
Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die
How To Make a Killing
The Bride
Project Hail Mary
Cut Off (know nada about it, but the cast seems fun)
and of course Shelter and Mutiny, Statham's 2026 entries.

I’m hoping Disclosure Day is the next great Spielberg picture. He really knows how to tap into the Zeitgeist.

The print version of “Project Hail Mary” was exceptional. Give it a read if you are into sci-fi. From what I have seen in the trailer, they are going to be pretty faithful to the source material.

I watched Natural Born Killers (1994) last night. Directed by Oliver Stone, supposedly written (at least in part) by Tarantino. It was interesting. A statement on media sensationalizing violence but made before the internet existed. It is definitely not for everyone but I have pretty weird movie tastes and I enjoyed it.

The Eagle Has Landed. Great cast, Michael Caine is great as a German paratroop colonel, Robert Duvall another colonel given the task to plan a mission to kidnap Churchill. Donald Pleasance is an excellent Himmler. Donald Sutherland is an Irishman in Germany tasked with aiding the mission as his way of screwing England. Jenny Agutter is an idiotic cute English girl who falls for Sutherland (in two days). This is a mixed bag. Everything aside from the Jenny Agutter love interest (which has awful dialogue and no basis in the plot) is very good. Great dialogue from Duvall in particular. Treat Williams and Larry Hagman are US Rangers stationed in England.

All star cast.

The Life of Chuck (2024)

I really liked this movie. It was one part metaphysics, and one part the life story of an ordinary man. Interestingly, "Chuck" doesn't appear, live, until 35 minutes into this movie. The story is by Stephen King, and it combines the suspenseful elements of that group of hogs stories with the warm elements for movies like Stand by Me. It's quirky well worth watching.

The way Stone plays with narrative in this film is really interesting. He moves seamlessly from drama, to sit-com, to cartoon (and more) and keeps the story thread alive. The editing is brilliant. He eventually settles on the Geraldo thing for the last third of the film, which was disappointing even if you like Robert Downey Jr. It is the rare film where the story telling is more important than the story.

I saw the ultra-violence as spice for the stew rather than any real statement about society. It's more of a statement about movies.

Roofman (2025)

Channing Tatum has grown on me. Very likeable, and great actor.

Here, based on a true story, a prison escapee starts a new life. Kirsten Dunst costars.

A comedy, it really is a good movie on a cold night. Or a warm one.

Peter Dinklage plays a great dooshbagg Toys Are Us store manager.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Since there is really nothing that is both new and appealing, some classics are getting a look. This 1978 remake stars Donald Sutherland (Matthew) and Brooke Adams (Elizabeth) as co-workers at the San Francisco Dept. of Health. Goop falls from space and Elizabeth's dentist boyfriend is suddenly not acting like himself and similar reports occur around the city. Jeff Goldblum is Matthew's buddy Jack and his wife Nancy (a shockingly fit and athletic looking Veronica Cartwright) first discover a body being duplicated. Leonard Nimoy is Matthew's famous psychiatrist friend who tries to calm down people claiming their loved ones have changed. Robert Duvall is in this for about 10 seconds. Eventually Matthew, Elizabeth, Jack and Nancy figure out that plant like pods are replacing people, but by then everyone is one of them. Final scene is somewhat famous. It's a good taught horror thriller.

Side note: it's fairly clear that Pluribus cribs pretty heavily from this. There are key differences, but the hive mind/coordination is similar, as is the space connection.

Shutter Island (2010) - I thought it kind of sucked. The characters were not interesting enough to carry it through a plot that was obvious. Not sure why a big cast like this signed up for such a mediocre movie.

Scorcese would be my guess

I don't know Dove. This has chick flick written all over it. The lonely but noble wife. The pouty, head strong daugther. The flawed boyfriend with a heart of gold. The learning to drive scenes. My wife dragged me to it. Yep, Tatum is likeable and established a strong career. Movies like this are the penalty for making my wife sit through Dune or Midway. Not that bad really.

Galaxy Quest. Stars Tim Allen Sigourney Weaver (at peak), Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub and others. Aging former TV stars of a Star Trek like show called Galaxy Quest are doing fan events and conferences. Four "fans" show up, and The Commander (Allen) thinks its a private paid event. Instead they take him in their space ship. The Aliens are being annihilated by another alien race and need the help of The Commander. This is quite well done and is pretty funny. The scenes with the Galaxy Quest nerds led by Justin Long stand out. Well worth a watch.

One of the best sci fi comedies ever. Lovingly pokes fun at Star Trek.

Watched The Rip (Netflix) last night. Was good seeing Matt & Ben together again. I thought it was well written and acted - lots of tension once they find the money. Many early reviewers don't seem to agree, but I think it's one of the better cop movies in awhile. YMMV.

We watched it last night too. I agree. Thought it was well done all around and while you could guess as to some of what was going on, it wasn’t obvious and so kept you engaged and interested. Based on a true story. For a Netflix release, it was much better than most.

Roofman. Reviewed already but I thought this was very good. Fun, enjoyable, has you rooting for a criminal. The fact that this really happened is wild. The guy is clever. In the movie also charming. I initially thought Kiersten Dunst was too old for Channing Tatum, then looked it up and he’s two years older. Whoa. In any event this is a very nice movie, unusual perhaps but familiar. I’d definitely recommend it. Paramount +.

And yet the way it's done stays perfectly in context with the movie. The "chompers" scene comes to mind. "This episode is poorly written!" or the casual aside to Tim Allen's character about him doing forward roles as he runs. "Does that help?" "I think it does." Just quick asides that don't really break the fourth wall, but our references for fans of the original Star Trek. Also love the reference to the unnamed "crewman" on the way missions getting killed funny stuff.

Tron Ares (2025)

This is the third, I think, movie in the Tron universe. The effects are fine and the reference to the 80s movie effects was funny. Overall, though, it was tough to care about the characters. The central theme is that the "system" programs and items from operating system can be brought into the real world, but only last 29 minutes. The movie deals with the search for the "permanent code" which will allow them to exist indefinitely.

It was OK.

One Battle After Another ( 2025)

Entertaining, for sure.

Nonsensical...yep.

But entertaining.

I can see Sean Penn getting an Oscar nod. DiCaprio, not really showing us anything he hasn't done before.

I started it last night. Was so bored and the whole "code fighting" thing was so silly I turned it off and put on Roofman.
