I hit a comedy trifecta on Tubi. Three of my fave comedies I haven't seen in awhile: My Blue Heaven, The Freshman, and Bandits. It's like Tubi was tuned to me with that sequence.

I always get just a little sad watching The Freshman as Bruno Kirby died waaaaay too young. And if My Blue Heaven doesn't have the greatest pickup line ever ("It's dangerous for you to be in frozen food... you could melt all this stuff") then I don't know what's better.

Most of y'all probably know the first two. For whatever reason Bandits was never the hit I thought it should've been. And I blame the casting of Bruce Willis for that. His hair was entirely unconvincing and he more or less sleepwalked through the whole thing save for the bank scenes. This would've worked better with someone like Clooney in that role. That said, this might be Cate Blanchett's sexiest role ever (and she's great as a redhead). The kitchen dance scene is chef's kiss. Most of all, it is Billy Bob Thornton's film I can't say enough about his comedy chops in this one as a total neurotic hypochondriac. His neuroses actually gets funnier with each viewing. It does get sappy and silly in the end, but the first half to 2/3rds is great, mostly due to Thornton and Blanchett.
The Freshman is an underappreciated gem. Brando is so good and has fun with it, Penelope Ann Miller is outrageously appealing and Broderick plays himself as usual.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Since there is really nothing that is both new and appealing, some classics are getting a look. This 1978 remake stars Donald Sutherland (Matthew) and Brooke Adams (Elizabeth) as co-workers at the San Francisco Dept. of Health. Goop falls from space and Elizabeth's dentist boyfriend is suddenly not acting like himself and similar reports occur around the city. Jeff Goldblum is Matthew's buddy Jack and his wife Nancy (a shockingly fit and athletic looking Veronica Cartwright) first discover a body being duplicated. Leonard Nimoy is Matthew's famous psychiatrist friend who tries to calm down people claiming their loved ones have changed. Robert Duvall is in this for about 10 seconds. Eventually Matthew, Elizabeth, Jack and Nancy figure out that plant like pods are replacing people, but by then everyone is one of them. Final scene is somewhat famous. It's a good taught horror thriller.

Side note: it's fairly clear that Pluribus cribs pretty heavily from this. There are key differences, but the hive mind/coordination is similar, as is the space connection.

I liked the original version of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" a bit more than this remake, but the remake was certainly entertaining and a good movie as well.

Post this in the new thread. But yeah Pluribus isn’t as original as it is made out to be.

But also I think there is a reason why this movie made then and why Pluribus is made now. When significant parts of society are losing their minds..

Watched F1 (Netflix) last night. It was fine as a racing movie, lots of good racing shots. I knew it was an expensive sport, but had no idea of all the technology involved. But throughout the racing scenes, one of my pet peeves about sports movies kept coming up - the announcer constantly talking about every little move a guy in the middle of the pack is making when we pretty much know 98% of live commentary is on the leaders. It got irksome.
Irksome, huh?

I came across Middle Men on Tubi last night. Never heard of it but the plot summary seemed intriguing as did the cast. Luke Wilson plays a businessman who specializes in fixing bad businesses. Two drugged out geniuses develop the first online pron site, make money, and blow it on more drugs, while also partnering with the Russian mob. Luke is hired to fix it. James Caan plays a sleazy lawyer. Giovanni Ribisi is over the top nuts as one of the druggie inventors. Rade Serbedzija plays his usual heavy. Kevin Pollack is an FBI agent. Cameos by Robert Forster (scene stealer), Kelsey Grammer, and John Ashton. There's lots of gratuitous T&A for those interested.

It's really an above-average watch, but was a box office bomb, making $750K against a $20M budget. Seems the distributor didn't know how to promote it (it's an R-rated crime comedy loosely based on a an actual internet entrepreneur's experiences), and was only in theatres for 3 weeks. Too bad, this should have been much bigger. It's not Oscar-worthy, but it's a fun tale with good acting and I recommend it.
