Back in 1978, C. Vivian Stringer applied for the head coaching position at Syracuse so that she could be with her husband who was attending medical school at Syracuse. Her sister was also attending Syracuse at the time. When Stinger walked into the women's athletic adminstrator's office for her interview, the adminstrator thought that Stringer was the cleaning lady and pointed her toward the broom closet where she could find her equipment. When this not so minor misunderstanding was cleared up, the adminstrator reaches for Stringer's resume, which she had not read, listens to Stringer reeel off her qualifications, then asks, "So what makes you think you can coach at Syracuse?" After Stringer patiently reiterates her qualifications, the adminstrator suggested she apply to some of the high schools in the area. Imagine that?
I am firmly in the camp of those who wholeheartedly believe that things happen for a reason. Landing that Syracuse job could very easily have stifled Coach Stringer's Hall of Fame career; Could have nipped it in the bud. There is no way to fully account for all the implications that would have entailed; Cheyney, Iowa, Rutgers, WBCA, to name a few.
Who eventually got that Syracuse job? A familiar name for sure, Barbara Jacobs.
