R.I.P. Charlie Daniels

This is as good a time as any to remind everyone that the devil kicked Johnny's ass in that fiddle battle.

RIP Charlie.
 
Saw him last year for the first time with The Cadillac Three and Travis Tritt in what turned out to be his final Pittsburgh show. Heck of a performer.

I saw him a few times, opening for Marshall Tucker, and for Willie Nelson. I liked his music, except for Devil Went Down to Georgia. It was soooooo overplayed.
 
So Sad. A great performer and southern gentleman and very charitable with his time and money. Also, having grown up in Wilmington, NC , he was a big supporter of our military personnel.

I saw CDB at their height in 1980 at a sold out Hartford CC, then twice in CT during the late 90's and finally in what turned out to be his last tour, Nov. 2019 at the Oakdale with the Allman Betts Band supporting. That was an amazing show. With three sons of the original Allman Brths performing together on the same stage with a southern music icon, things had certainly come full circle.
 
Saw Charlie Daniels Band open for Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band (or was the bill reversed?) at the HCC in the fall of 1982. Gr8 show. Remember I hitched from UConn to New Haven (Southern) to meet my BFF and drive back to Hartford (only one hitch, picked up on 195 before 4 corners, but not the smartest plan).

Came back to Storrs with the SCSC guys and raged my dorm, they were all jealous of the shenanigans at the flagship university (despite the 5:1 female to male ratio at Southern).

Then CDB played the Norwalk Oyster Fest in the early 2000's. Charlie's politics (and religious fervor) had swing right by then, but they show still rocked. RIP Charlie & no doubt if there's a rematch with the devil you'll come out on top again.

Saw him in Willowbrook Park in New Britain with Stevie Ray Vaughn and the first version of the Greg Allman Band which pretty sure had Dickie Betts in it. That was the order, Charlie, Stevie, and Greg closed the show. This was say 1984.
The man made a lot of music.

Still in Saigon is my favorite from Charlie.
 
one of the best concerts I ever saw in my life (and that includes 350 GD shows, Dylan at Toads place, the Stones at Toads place and hundreds of others) was Charlie Daniels Band at Hartford Civic on August 31st, 1980. I dont care that he turned out to be a redneck . He had IT.
 
One of the strangest concert bills I ever saw was the Charlie Daniels Band as the headliner with Wishbone Ash and Vinegar Joe as the opening acts. One of those didn't go with the other two, but it was a phenomenal concert.
 
I spent about an hour with Charlie Daniels, escorting him back stage at an expo he was performing at in Alabama, and then watched his show from back stage. 3-4 years ago. Dude was high as balls on uppers, was going a mile a minute. Genuinely shocked his heart didn't explode before now,

He was a part-time local resident, and was still vocal in the community 'til the end. From a letter to editors of our local paper less than a week ago:

there really are a lot of steeler fans. and charlie fans, too.
 
Charlie Daniels played on blonde on blonde and Nashville skyline. He didn’t need to do anything after that but did a lot more.

And he had a tour set up for this summer with a stop at The Indian Ranch in Webster MA along with Marshall Tucker Band (what's left of them) :(
 
Saw him perform at the Grand Ole Opry in 2010 and last June 2019. Quite the musician, and a very proud American until the end.

You sure about that? Now shrooms were prevalent at that time so I could be wrong but I do not recall Seger even touring in 1982 and I certainly do not recall him playing with CDB in Hartford during the early 80's (I worked at the HCC) ... Michael Bolton warmed up Seger in 83 at the HCC.

Charlie Daniels was a well known heroin junkie , he cleaned up but still loved his coke.

In 1982, CDB played the Hartford CC on April 23rd. Jimmy Hall opened.

That's quite a trio of posts.

April 1969 saw the release not only of "Nashville Skyline," but also the album pictured below. The Producer credit shows as "Charles E. Daniels."

I saw CDB a bunch of times in the late 70s and early 80s. Always a fun show. I always got a kick out of his song Uneasy Rider.

There's a pretty quality SBD or FM bootleg of that show out there. I think I have a copy on an old harddrive. There seems to be some confusion amongst traders as to whether it's 8/31/80 or 9/1/80 but I'm guessing it's that show regardless as I suspect they didn't do two nights in a row at the Civic Center in 1980 but what do I know...
