Quietly, the College Football Playoff’s Group of 6 rep no longer needs to be a conference champ…

What’s the likelihood our distribution changes? Do we have anyone advocating for us in these meetings? I know we are technically a part of the Group of Six but without conference affiliation who is at the table for us, if anyone?

This is a good question for a reporter to ask David Benedict.

Until the playoffs expands, pretty close to zero. Someone would need to voluntarily reduce their payout for us to get more.

If the playoff expands, I think we end up with more money but still less than the G6 teams.

You guys keep getting the conspiracy theory wrong. An expanded playoff is going to generate mountains of cash for the P4, so I also expect the payout to the G6 to go up. I also think the odds are pretty high that UConn gets their distribution increased to match the rest of the G6 teams. All of this is small dollars, and the major conferences do not want to upset the apple cart with more lawsuits or teams dropping down a level. The P4 need the fan interest and the G6 as a minor league for player development. The P4 have been pretty consistent about paying the G6 to shut up.

-> “The reality is, as an independent, if you’re not Notre Dame, you have no representation within that organization,” said Benedict of the CFP’s governing body. “If you are a commissioner of another G6 conference, why would you care about us? I get it, but at the same time, it’s difficult to rationalize why we are treated differently. We’ve been playing DI FBS football for over 20 years. That’s a lot longer than a lot of those who have moved up and get a full G6 share.

“It’s like we don’t exist. Unless I contact someone or reach out, no one is worried about us.”

Benedict has, indeed, reached out. He’s discussed the issue with a variety of commissioners and CFP officials. In fact, he’s been aggressive enough that the topic ignited discussion at the last meeting of commissioners and Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua in Dallas last month. <-

Thank you posting this. Seems like AD Dave is being proactive but I assume there is only so much he can do. The next question becomes, can anyone else get involved at this point? Is there anyone at the table we can get on our side?

We "technically" are not part of the G6. That's the problem.

Right because in reality, we are pretty much a carbon copy of Notre Dame ...just need that little NBC tv deal.

Wait, new joke, I think we are the "+" in "G6+"

True, but prior to this change our only path would have been as an at-large (in addition to the highest ranked G6 champ), which would have been a virtual impossibility (regardless of what we did on the field, we would never have received enough votes to be ranked high enough for consideration as an at large).

The can now technically call us the highest ranked G6 school (even if we are not in a G6 conference) and potentially place us instead of a G6 champion. Prior to this we would have had to have been in addition to a G6 champion.

I'm not complaining about the decision, I'm just highlighting our lack of representation. I wouldn't expect a representative of the G6 conferences to look after the interest of someone who is not a member.

Is this confirmed? If we are not in a G6 conference, are we eligible to get the G6 auto bid? Or are we still regulated to one of the highest rated non conference champion (wild card) because we are not in a conference?

It's just speculation on my part. The logical reason for this is to allow the committee to cap G level (or non P level) schools at one. Prior to this, we would have had to have made it as an at-large over a P level at-large.

Now they can theoretically give us a bid over a G level school as if we have a season where we could warrant consideration they wouldn't be able to claim we can't be considered as we are neither a P level nor G level school.
