I love this. That must have been a lot of fun. I am a huge Modern fan. It drives me crazy when people who eat New Haven Pizza will state something like, "I love Sally's. Pepe's is garbage." I know taste is subjective but truthfully, Modern, Sally's, Pepe's, Mondo's etc are all friggin delicious. You might have a preference based on your experience but you give me any of those Pizzas and I am a very happy man.

100%! All good pies. It was a great night

It really is amazing the influence he has on pizza sales when he's a culinary moron. He constantly calls basil "oregano" and margherita pizza "napolitano". His only comment on sauce is whether is has "tang" or not. But good on him, he's created an empire.

It's amazing the influence on everything that he has had when he's just a moron in general. But 'merica.

Still, I watch his videos and have used the app to see how "Dave scored it" at times when looking for pizza in random places. I posted above that I'll be in NYC tomorrow night and got some rec's. I then cross referenced those with One Bite. I'll say I've more or less agreed with his scores for the most part. Still think Modern and Pepe's are much better than Sally's but whatever...

Ohhhh, that one. The pizza there is sometimes fantastic. Sometimes not. Whole place/vibe there, though, just skeeves me out. Have worked in RH for over 20 years and I've heard things.
Agree. There are many excellent pizza places/restaurants in the tri town (RH/Ngtn,Weth) area. Michaelangelos pizza is one, though the decor/ambiance is shaky at best, diveish at least. LOL

I’m taking my son to the UConn game tomorrow… his first time in Connecticut. In Fairfield area, need best pizza spots. (I’m not gonna look through that monster thread of 1000 posts just need a quick poll)

The fact that Planet Pizza is on here made me laugh out loud

Voted Sally's. Cannot go wrong there.

Pepe's is #2 but do NOT order delivery from there. I've tried original, Fairfield, and Danbury Pepe's and think anything but the original spot lacks quality so take that into account.

If you're into thin crust and heat, Colony Grill hot oil pizza isn't too bad either (again... eat there for best taste).

FYI: Original Sally's is closed until the end of the month for maintenance on their oven so definitely got to Fairfield location if that's the final choice.

Voted Other (Modern).

Been a few years so not sure if this still holds, but I preferred Modern over Pepe’s/Sally’s and it was much easier to get into.

Even though Sally's in New Haven is closed right now, just an FYI that matches your point. My son was in New Haven a few weeks ago and called Sally's around 4:30 to order a pizza. He was told the pizza would be ready in 4 hours. Crazy. Modern never seems to have waits like that.

IMO Pepe's and Sally's are in a tier of their own. Wooster St is a pilgrimage every pizza lover must make. plus you can get dessert at Libby's pastry shop down the block afterwards.

edit- i tried modern multiple times and the crust was always too soft/droopy it never had the same char you get at pepe's/sally's

Sallys in Fairfield blows. They all stink in Fairfield, but Pepe’s is probably the best of those.

Grigg Street Pizza off Greenwich Avenue. Thought it was good to very good but not in the top tier of NYC slices I've had. Id def get it again but dealing with the avenue traffic and crowd would put me off a bit. I think Glenville or Pizza Post would still give it a run but out of convenience, give me a Riko's hot oil or sausage pie anyday

A few weeks ago over the holidays Modern had a 1 hr and 20 minute wait for seating. I like their $5 craft beer waiting in line so I stuck it out.

Use the Sally's App if you're ordering ahead.

It's not so much that Sally's is backed up for takeout. It's really that they limit the orders they'll make for takeout in 15 minute intervals. So they'll only make 5 pizzas in that time. If 100 people want takeout at Sally's you'll be waiting until midnight.

I’ve done the tour many times

If right in Fairfield, Colony is a good pie. If New Haven, the consensus of those that I dine with is that the Modern meat bomb is hands down the best pie in town. Surprised it wasn’t an option. I second that.

Sally’s in NH is always a crazy wait, and it’s pizza for gods sake. That said if you’re going to do it for the full experience go to Wooster/NH, great vibe.

For those that haven’t seen “Pizza: A Love Story”, worth the watch. Goes through the entire history of NH and a lot of celebrity stories. I know the guy at the door at Pepe’s NH, apparently Hurley Sr is a patron when he comes through and he front doors him. Has also seen through a number of other interesting people, like Larry Fitzgerald and MLK III.

Zuppardi's in West Haven makes the best pizza I've ever had anywhere: fresh shucked white clam pizza. It's $$$ tho

I haven’t been able to get a takeout pizza from modern in months.
