I only started following recruiting in 06 after we lost everybody and had to completely rebuild.. pre 06 was it ever like it is today where we are heavily involved with 2/3 of the top 50? I know it hasnt been like this in the 8 years ive been following.

From 03-06 we were involved with a lot of good players. I mean Durant and Lawson visited UConn together at one point. I thought Villanueva was a mortal lock for Kansas and we managed to get him.

Not to answer your question really, but the Sticks, Dyson, Curtis Kelly, Thabeet, Wiggins, etc. class in 06 was enormous.

Always "involved" with good/great players in the Top 25-50 almost every year after 89-90 it would seem or thereabouts. Depends on the definition of involved……..I mean going back to the 90's until now it wasn't unusual for UConn to be listed for a while or visited by many top players………Rudy Johnson was top 50, Ray was top 50, Caron, AJ, Smitty, Donyell was top 10 as was Rip, KEA was McD's AA….Travis Best was Top 20 and KO took his spot on the roster but to this day rumors are he would've selected UConn if they waited (Thank God)…….they've been swimming in the Top 50 waters for a long time now. But it looks like they're ready to step in and harpoon some whales!!!;)

The 1991 class was huge. Donyell was McD AA, and Ollie and Fair were very highly ranked. And we got that class because Howie was willing to drive like a bat out of hell from Bradley.

Donny was in that class too.

I think this year we have more big names we are on their shorter list than ever before.

In 04 AJ and Rudy were supposed to be the next great Uconn duo to replace Ben and Mek. If you wanna talk about a star studded class look no further then the 2011 class with AD, DD and Boat.

And Rudy Johnson as well. Wasn't he some type of player of the year in Florida?

I think so. A lot of that group seemed to be their state's player of the year.

I think the real question is has the recruiting changed or has the coverage of the recruiting changed. For anyone else who made an attempt to follow recruiting before the Internet it's crazy to think about what we have on hand now. I remember flipping through Street and Smith or going to the Top Recruits section in the back of the Athlon Sports College Basketball Preview and just speculating based on where they went to HS. Now, just type in a name.

I'm not sure it's changed at all; I just think we know alot more about it now.

I remember that class well 2 top 10 type players and another top 50..the dd commit came out of no where but I dont remember us being involved with this many kids.

You mentioned it in the original post, but '06 was the year we were probably involved with the most kids - more out of necessity due to everybody being on their way out the door. We brought in nine, after also getting commitments from a couple others who backed out (Ramar Smith, primarily). We also missed out on the Kevin Durant one-year rental, several kids who went to UNC (Ellington, Lawson, Thompson), Gerald Henderson, and a few more. That was a wide, wide net.

Pretty sure Kirk King was a to 50 recruit and Louisiana's POY in '92/'93 as well.
