I have seen team managers hold up placards above the heads of the players that stand surrounding the coach and players sitting on the bench during time outs...Does anyone know what type of info is on there? Just curious.

I am not sure who communicates it to the manager - just because someone checks in doesn’t tell you who is coming out.

The numbers that aren't on the board are coming out.
Players 1,2,3,4 and 5 were in before the TO.
The board has 1, 6, 3, 4 and 7. That means 2 and 5 subbed out.
Doesn't that make sense?

I have noticed in the play by play on the ESPN app, it normally shows a player subbing in and a player subbing out at the same time as the stoppage of the game. See 7:56 below.

Pretty sure it is to block sight lines for TV cameras and opposing assistants - I've seen assistants or managers also forming a little wall between the huddle and the opposing bench.

I was down behind the bench a week ago Sunday and yesterday. To me it looked like the guy holding the clipboard was matching who was guarding who by showing the UConn player’s number and right next to it the opposing player’s number. So defensive assignments.

He appears to hold the placard up around the minute mark before play resumes. I believe that it is a non verbal warning to Geno that he has a minute left.

It is simply to keep team info confined to the team.

As I sit right behind the bench and see this every game, it is the numbers of the players in the game for the OTHER TEAM. That way, the team will infer who their defensive assignment is.

I asked a former UConn women’s manager. Although they did not do this when she was there, she stated that the boards both indicate who will be in for UConn and also their defensive assignments.

So yes, most of the answers provided were correct.

The only thing is, after a time out, how do they really know what opposing players will be coming out? When they are playing Tennessee it will really difficult.

If players 1,2,3,4 & 5 were playing at the time of the game stoppage and players 1,3,5,6 & 7 are on the placard, that the manager gets from the scorers, then players 2 and 4 are coming out. I would hope that during a stoppage of play, anyone checking in has to do this a before a specific time in order to go in. Maybe like 30 seconds?
