Question for Mod's

Why can't I use the c and s word for excrement or the rick with a p in front of it but this SouthTampaBill guy can post his hateful racist and anti-Semitic garbage on here. I love this board but it really bothers me that innocent words are being censored but this Neanderthal gets to espouse his hate speech whenever he wants. I find him incredibly offensive and don't think there is any place for him on this board.

I thought about making a similar post after all those hate filled draft night threads but then never ended up doing it. Thanks superjohn for actually doing it. I agree with everything you said.

To add to the censorship filter stuff, it seems that the mods on this board are more concerned about banning people who come up with crazy conference realignment ideas (see HuskyFanDan or Fishy's "A Visitor's Guide to Our Board" thread) than actual bigots who repeatedly spout out hate speech. It's really sad.

I could be wrong, but it appears B Vogel (aka SouthTampaBill) has finally been banned. If that's the case I'm glad, but the truth is it took way too long for that to actually happen. He should have been given the boot after his bigoted rants during the initial Sterling incident months ago.

if its true B Vogel finally got banned good, the fact that he was allowed to carry on as long as he did was a very bad look for the people that run this board, it looked like ya'll were protecting him. we've got parents of players who have been on the board and posted, and you got a a racist running wild posting whatever he felt like getting off his chest, wtf is wrong with ya'll.

In defense of the mods, I think the profanity filter has to do with advertisements or other things outside of their control. But yeah, I have no idea why south tampa bill is still allowed to post here, he doesn't even attempt to hide his racism anymore.

We come here to talk UConn and other bball related stuff. This board is an escape and it's supposed to be fun, I along with others don't want to see some idiot posting his racist beliefs all over a UConn bball forum.

As others have pointed out, recruits and players and their families read this board. I never was "hurt" by what STB wrote (and my religion was a target on draft night), but it's embarrassing to have that garbage on this board.

Isn't there an ignore feature? Yes indeed, there is ignore feature. I agree the presence of racist comments detracts from the board, and insulting posters and others simply for the sake of getting a rise is trolling; however, the ignore function works fairly well at removing that content. Refusing to respond to it works even better. Do not give the person the emotional satisfaction they crave, give them the mute responses they deserve. It has the benefit of demonstrating your ability to rise above it and frustrates the heck out of the offending party. This is not a situation where one person is able to undercut the morale of the corps, it's a case where the corps can show it solidarity and wisdom by simply doing nothing.

I'm not sure what my status is today; but, I have been a mod at times.

This is a wonderful board. I give credit to three people and the basic thread that has run through this for 15+ years is that we have generally given free reign to what people can type with their fingers. You can be as stupid as you want to be.

Having said that ... I somewhat agree with ConnHuskBask (which doesn't happen often). Here are a few things you all need to remember. One person can come back to this board in 20 different usernames. Yes, the mods are clever at checking URLs; but, that also is somewhat easy to circumvent. Finding a new place to type is easy. Second, I have seen lots of simply hateful thoughts on here. I actually found myself never reading b vogel or SouthTampaBill. Or probably a few others. I just start ... and end within a nanosecond. You simply can't moderate as good as some here would like. Constant racist and anti-Semitic positions are tossed here with some regularity. More likely, some board member goes right back at the person. And, these boards are not monitored 24/7; though, you might notice that Fishy has the weirdest hours of anyone in the EST.

I am sorry if many of you found one poster offensive. This thread should serve to keep the mods and the rest of us to be diligent to not let someone go several postings.

We like this board. The primary reason, I might remind you, is that it has always been welcoming to new contributors. We have been generally good at being open to opponents fans. I think that I have noticed a new significant generation of posters and I love that about this place. It's not perfect though.

This board is one of my favorite places on the internet. That said it does seem that we give a lot more latitude to posters who obviously just come here to post something for the sole purpose of insigating a negative reaction- either against Uconn 's team, fans or what ever group de jour they hate.

Other boards of top teams do seem to have a much quicker hook for those types of posters. I am not really sure what they add to this forum even in the summer months. Letting any bigot or teenager post whatever they want for weeks is annoying.

Free speech has it's place but this is not a news show. Most Boneyarders like it when fans of other teams come here and talk smack or want to discuss a game ect... But if you go to the Duke board and do not use proper English you are banned in about 5 seconds.

Maybe the mods could give a few more posters they know personally more latitude to delete posts or ban numb nuts?

when you're getting on the board and calling Black people vermin and making threads saying they can't speak well, that goes beyond being a or ignore features, get that clown off the board entirely. he went unchecked for way too long, there isn't any place for that on a basketball board.

As someone suggested, there is an "ignore" feature available, as well as one to report offensive posts. Anyone too lazy to use it, or too stupid to figure out how, shouldn't blame the admins or moderators.

As for the filter ... Yup ... Any word found offensive to an advertiser, is added to the list. If you think that is silly, join the club. If it really pisses you off, leave and never return.

This isn't meant for anyone in this thread, but it is the reality I have to live with. We all have to live with.

BTW - Bill is gone again, thanks to a user who reported his posts from a few days ago. If he returns ... And he will ... I'll contact his ISP. That's the best I can do, and it's the best I have been able to do.
