If it has been reported correctly that Coach Walz from Louisville is speaking to Mississippi State then this is at least two straight years he has at least listened to other offers. Does anyone have any insight if he is constantly looking for another job or if he is just looking for raises?

My take is he is a desirable commodity so other fan bases and administrations involve him or want him involved in their coaching search so he then, smartly, leverages that interest into more pay for himself. His results are strong and he should be on any programs list to talk to until he formally states unequivocally that he LOVES Louisville and will never leave.

Yep, he never shuts it down.

Louisville fan here. Walz was a Tom Jurich hire and they were pretty close. With Jurich now gone, Walz has started listening to other offers. He even hired an agent played some hardball with Louisville last off-season over the Tennessee opening. Vince Tyra has a business background. When he was made the permanent AD, one of his directives was to get the spending back under control. There has been rumors that he and Walz don’t have the greatest of relationships.

With all that being said, I don’t think Walz will take the job. He is from Kentucky and him and his family really seem to love it here. But I guess at this point, I can’t say that I would be shocked if he does leave. Just one man’s opinion.

From the article:
"A source said the four highest-paid U of L coaches agreed to their salary reductions last Friday ... . Men’s basketball coach Chris Mack has a base salary of $4 million, football coach Scott Satterfield earns $3.25 million, women’s basketball coach Jeff Walz makes $1.475 million and baseball coach Dan McDonnell earns $1 million. That would equate to a savings of about $972,500."

This would actually bode well for MSU's chances of buying Walz away from UL.

This in the midst of a global pandemic in which thousands are dying every day and millions are out of work. It's nuts. MSU should step back, take a deep breath and hire McCray.
Or if they hire Walz, Louisville should hire McCray to replace Jeff and save a lot more than 10% of Jeff's salary.

Not saying I don't agree but would UCONN fans feel this way if they were replacing Geno?

Not sure what you mean, and maybe it's my thick brain today, would you clarify? Is it Geno taking a pay cut or something else?

I meant, lets say Geno retires. UCONN has the chance to hire another top flight coach but isn't cheap but there is a current pandemic as the poster alluded to. Would UCONN fans be okay with settling for a lesser option for much cheaper or do you stick with your AD trying to get the proven top flight coach?

Im neutral but can certainly understand both sides perspective. Almost every school will be losing money from this situation.

I would but it's mostly a moot point since I don't think UConn will be in a position to afford hiring a top flight coach when Geno retires.

Well, UConn is in a financial situation now and Geno has already not taken as much money as he could/should from any number of schools. If he were to retire tomorrow, UConn would not be offering Jeff Walz or Vic Shaeffer that $1.5-2.0 mil range at all. They would be cutting back significantly. Would it be to coach like a Meg Duffy or Carla Berube type, probably or as a further fall back to Shea. I just think the program needs someone with previous HC experience despite Shea's 9 years as an assistant at UConn. But no, UConn would not be going after another top flight coach like Rueck, Graves, Walz or a Schaeffer, in my humble opinion. So no, I would not be upset.

The rumbling is that Walz is the guy.

Sometimes it's more about pride than dollars 'n cents.

While Jeff is negotiating with MSU, the good news for Louisville fans is that Jody Demling is off a ventilator as of today. Jody, who does a great job covering Louisville sports for Scout, is hospitalized with the corona virus.

McCray would be a good hire. I’ll believe it when I see it with Jeff but money talks sometimes.

Awesome news. We have a beat writer for Ole Miss fighting it now. Any thoughts and prayers would be greatly appreciated. It is amazing when I come in threat like this brings so many “rivals” together.

Wonderful news. It seems as each day passes by our health care workers are learning more and more how to treat and manage these patients!

I completely understand her point of view. She is directly impacted and obviously has a big stake in what happens next. From every dealing I have ever had with her and by all accounts she is a great young lady. However I don’t fault at all Coach Schaefer for what he did. He did what he felt was best for his family both financially and in terms of life after his basketball career is done. One of the things I heard he talked about was that Blair would have more opportunities in Texas. As adamant a fan of Mississippi State as I am I can certainly see where that would be true.

Vic clearly loved MSU and the people. I think Vic always wanted to end up back in Texas. That is where he is from and where his family is.

If Texas or Texas AM job didn’t open up, he was never leaving for anywhere else IMO

While unfortunate and devastating for him to leave. He left a brand at MSU and a program in great shape to take over by a quality coach moving forward.
