QB Joe Fagnano headed to the East-West Shrine Bowl (1/27/26 Frisco, Texas)

Why the all star games are important:

His practice performances in an all star game (he dominated a couple prominent offensive linemen in one on one drill) landed him a combine invitation. His combine performance (along with what he did in all star game practice) bumped him from possibly being drafted to a third round pick.

I omitted his name but for those who may not know (I imagine most do), I was referring to Travis Jones.

Couldn't be there for his teammates but he'll be at this one for himself.
This is literally going through the car wash, with all the scouts watching him. I can’t remember any UConn players going. Maybe Orlovsky? Stop being so grumpy and be happy for him.

So he should go to the practices and then skip the game?
It doesn't matter. And that particular exhibition game can help him, the one you are sore about him missing can only hurt.

I would suggest being thankful for what he has already done for UConn.

I think it’s ok to be thankful for what he has done and also be disappointed that he left the team when they had a chance for a 10th win.

Like this?

I owe (UConn’s coaches) a lot, not only for making me a better football player, but a better leader, a better person. The biggest thing was showing I could be a starter for a whole season. … What I can reflect on is the relationships I was able to build with so many people, long-lasting friendships, and the last two years with the success we’ve had, the footprint we’ve made at UConn is going to last for a time to come, hopefully just a small, little footstool for what UConn can be and where it’s going.”

You mean like him leading UConn to the best back to back seasons in school history? That's not enough? You want one more against a team known for chop blocks? You want him to play in a game that does not matter and risk his shot at a professional career. Because why?

How am I being selfish?

What in my statement isn't true?

For himself? So if he has even a cup of coffee in the NFL it's not something that you as a fan can be proud of. If he has a great East/West Shrine game and gets drafted, you can't claim to be happy. Because he's only doing it for himself. His success doesn't reflect well on his teammates. His success isn't something that his offensive line can be proud of. His success isn't something that fans can be proud of. Because he is only doing it for himself.

Of course it's for himself. The bowl game on the 27th is for the team.

Take it easy man. Fagano is not a UConn player, he's a Fagano player. Every UConn basketball star who has left early is UConn. They finished the season and played post season. They love UConn and are part of its ethos today--all of them. Fagano is here for Fagano, good for him. He's the exact opposite of Orlosky, who came to UConn already in love with it and skipped Perdue. Who knows what would have happened if he succumbed to his Dad's wishes and went there. He ultimately went pro. Fagano is nice but he's not going to the NFL, not the traditional way anyway. The better story objectively would be taking UConn to a 10-2 season. Skylar Bell made Fagano, not the other way around. The only quarterback prospect to seriously hurt himself post season in recent memory is Jordan Travis. Fagano is not a scrambler. Quarterbacks don't get hurt. Speaking of Skylar, he could have enhanced his value by millions if he had a great game at Fenway. The story writes itself. A north eastern pro team would move up for him if that story broke large. Now. he's safe from injury but at what potential cost. He's going to have to suit up eventually and could hurt himself at a pro day instead of sitting out for the combine while resting on his seasons laurels highlighted nationally at an interesting bowl game. Skylar is not UConn player either. He plays for Bell, not UConn. Good for him, bye Felicia.

man is this fenway bowl about to be Army vs. UConn community college?

Lay off the rum brother. You're rambling.

So just so I'm clear, UConn football players play for themselves but basketball stars are UConn?

And something about Dan skipping chicken?

And Joe playing in a boring game against an academy isn't going to earn him anything. It's pretty telling that you think that.

I think he should reconsider his stance and play in the bowl game. He has the chance to be the first UConn QB to win 10 games in a season as a starter in the FBS era. One more game, on tv, where we will likely be the only game to watch, and a bunch of people who didn't watch UConn this year will get a chance to see what he can do.

But I don't get a vote. I wish him the best, and I thank him for everything he did for this school and this fan base...

I understand that there are two sides to this debate, but do you even care that you just cited how Army chop blocks on offense against our defense as a reason that a QB shouldn't play against Army's defense? Don't you think you can do better than that?

Yes, I intended to say cut tackle and it came out chop block. I'll eat that one.

Probably because he'll be without most of his offensive line and favorite receiver, going against an Army team whose offense limits the amount of offensive possessions the opposing team will have.

We need to cut out the debate and wish Joe good luck in the future! He helped turn around UConn football and he gave us his all. At this point, he has a shot of going pro and I doubt anybody would have thought that last year. Maybe he will be a back up and stick around in the NFL for a number of years. I hope he does!
