N&A: If UConn football moves to an independent status with its other sports moving to the Big East, does that team become attractive for Liberty on a yearly basis?

IM:
“We’ve had just some preliminary discussions with UConn and they’re still working out their arraignment with the AAC and the Big East. That would be a team we would like to play on a regular basis.”

N&A: If UConn becomes an independent in 2020, would you try to be flexible with other teams on the schedule to get UConn on there immediately?

IM:
“We’d be open to helping them out during the transition and seeing if there’s a way to move games and play them potentially as early as 2020.”

N&A: With UMass and Army already on the schedule, does adding UConn help expand Liberty’s brand and recognition more into the northeast?

IM:
“Really the other independents become a quasi-conference for us because we’ve scheduled UMass, we’d like to schedule Connecticut. New Mexico State we play, Army we play, BYU we play, and we’re still chasing Notre Dame and we’d like to get that one scheduled. They’d become a quasi-conference and particularly for those difficult dates to schedule in late October, November, those are very attractive games. We’re eager to pursue that.”

For later season games, most likely a no brainer for both schools. In before someone freaks out about the nation’s largest private university, drivable for many UConn fans and potentially recruits’ parents in the Mid Atlantic, a lot of nearby history for visitors, and already co-affiliate conference members in some other sports.

That boast includes an enormous number of online students from around the world. Check out the College Navigator and you'll find that 86% of Liberty's 75,000+ undergrads are either full-time or part-time enrolled in "distance education." The actual on-campus enrollment is about 12,000.

Liberty's and Falwell's evangelism and politics may not be my cup of tea, but the there are worse places to be for a football game in late October than Lynchburg. Combine that with a leisurely drive home through the Shenandoah Valley and you've got the makings of a pretty satisfying football weekend.

Now would I rather be driving to Charlottesville? Or maybe Blacksburg? He11 YES!
