As of now, I'm thinking of the Golden Era as a seven-year period beginning with 2007-08 and culminating in 2013-14. How great have those seasons been? Let me count the ways:
- Overall W-L record over seven years? How about 258-13, a 95.2% WP? That's pretty good right? Did even Pat Summitt put up a similar W-L over seven seasons? Absolutely not in a row is the short answer...so I handpicked seven of her championship seasons for her (leaving off the 10 losses of 1997). Her record spread over those non-consecutive seasons? 234-21, or 91.8% WP. In short, Tennessee's seven best seasons are clearly a bit below the balance of the seven seasons Uconn has just completed in terms of W-L. UConn's second-best seven-year run? That would be 1997-98 through 2003-04, when UConn posted a 238-17 record for a 93.3% WP. Bottom line, UConn is winning way, way more than it is losing, and, in these past seven years, it so happens that competition has been stiff.
- One of the things that makes this era golden is that UConn has been to seven consecutive Final Fours. Who else has been to seven F4s in seven seasons? No one- that's who. Tennessee 2002-2008 got close, making the F4 six times (2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008). But close is quite simply as close as anyone has gotten.
- Finally, no one else has come close to winning four NCs over seven seasons...well, except UConn, who won four in five. To summarize, no one else has won more than three NCs in seven seasons. ...and UConn has accomplished that very feat twice!
- Oh yeah, two more years of Stewie and Moriah, three more of Morgan and Saniya, four more of the excellent class of 2014, and four more on top of that of the stellar players from the class of 2015. In other words, the Golden Era is making its way up entirely to 24 Karat.
