Press the intensity

Hurley addressed this post Nova and said that because we are not as deep with just 7 players it would be hard to sustain without tiring our big guns out. Of course we get behind big and had no choice against Nova.
Pitino is going to do this to us Sunday and I hope we have a plan.

We used the press effectively—- it was the conduit to the turnaround
We have periods every game where the energy drops
Why not be the aggressor and use the press for periods of time to combat the lack of juice

Because prolonged pressing is a thing of the past. Teams can inbound (well, not us), get to the "soft" part of the press, and quickly move the ball to create mismatches. I'm fine with throwing it in here and there, but I think it was effective primarily as a change of pace and surprise. We'd also foul out our entire team in 7 minutes if we tried to press too much.

Too few players in our rotation. It's also not effective for long periods of the game, generally speaking. It's a look to disrupt an opponent who is on a run.

He also said 4 of 5 starters are not athletic enough to press. I've been saying all season that this team isn't super athletic, so without hot outside shooting, we're not going far.

Irony is that Pitino often relies on extending pressure and he doesn’t go very deep at all. Are his players better conditioned ?

Hass has tendinitis in his knee
Liam is coming off an ankle injury
Solo has been banged up lately

Add to that we run an offense with tons of motion

Excuses, that’s all we have, we press effectively, start pressing from the beginning, catch them off guard, get an early lead, not complicated

We can press 2-4 minutes a half even w 7-8 man rotation. It makes us the aggressor and revs our engines
Speaking my language in terms of energy uplifts - this team needs that, otherwise they feel like they're going through the motions.

This year I think the answer is yes. Yes they are better conditioned. Take a look at St. Johns 1st half vs. 2nd half splits this year. It's jaw dropping. They are one of the best 2nd half teams in recent memory. Certainly that must point to conditioning as a primary factor.

Last couple of years, we were the better 2nd half team because our Offense would run them ragged on D and by the second half they were a step slower.

This year, our Offense is limited by no Clingan, and frankly not tight motion offense.

We are going to need 3-4 people to bring the ball up vs pressure so we are not super tired in the second half. We need to execute on O and D in this one, and get our shooters the ball in space and drive more and utilize Tarris Reed, Jr. as well - we need them to pick up fouls and we don't get that done shooting 3s.
