Boyd has a decent game as did Arriola. The rest plumb stunk.

They will struggle to make the knockout playing defense that poorly. Also another ghosting by Altidore.

Arriola had the chance to go up 1-0 and punked out.

I really want to know why Fabian and Bobby Wood are being passed over.

We also have a handful of dmids like Alfredo Morales and Danny Williams who could do better than Trapp if given the same extended tryout that Trapp has been gifted.

I caught the last 10 minutes of the match after getting back from baseball practice. I should have not turned on the TV and just jumped straight in the pool. If the US makes it to the Quarterfinals of the Gold Cup, I will be surprised. If the results are as poor as expected, change will need to be made immediately as the US cannot risk not qualifying for 2 World Cups in a row.

That’s terrifying. They will waste another 12 months figuring out who to hire.

Keep in mind, they only interviewed one candidate. And he is the brother of USSF’s COO.

I'm curious if anyone in the USSF even blinks an eye if we get eliminated in the knockout rounds of the flipping Gold Cup. Seriously? Why bother anymore if you aren't even going to hire a coach who will do something right.

I know that coach would have to be a non MLS brown noser and there's a not a shot they go for another Jurgen, but at what point will there be enough outrage of some kind of this crap they are throwing out there and the talent that they aren't playing and wasting? We could take all the non-MLS players, from any age bracket USMNT and have them play in the Gold Cup and they'd make it further than the roster they put together currently.

Klinsman not looking so bad now.
Eh, he looks the same. Does it really matter if we lose with Klinnsman, Arena or Berhalter???

Although I'll wait to crucify Berhalter until he screws up "real" ("Gold Cup") games.

I'm coming around to the idea that leaving Sargent off both the Gold Cup and the Under 20 rosters is a firable offense.
Not sure there is gonna be a fireable offense for Berhalter.

Tatical mistakes were made in that first half you don't even see in U-12 academy. There is no justification at all for that performance. Simply pathetic.

Jurgen is the winningest Manager in the programs history. Can’t escape that fact.

Except it's not a fact.

Klinsmann - 55-16-27 (64.29%)
Arena - 81-35-32 (66.55%)

John Kowalski, Gene Chyzowych, Nat Agar and Thomas Cahill also had better percentages. But only a handful of games.

They can't pass accurately. They have terrible first touches. They turn the ball over even with no pressure being applied. Opponents move the ball freely and dictate the play.

Did I miss anything?

Klinsmann was susceptible to some of his own biases, including anti-MLS as much as Arena was a MLS flag-waver and Berhalter looks to be USSF's lapdog. None of those strategies work. I known I am in the minority; but, I believe excluding Donovan from the 2014 WC Roster in part due to his way too personal family feud with Donovan was a huge mistake that cost the USMNT the opportunity to advance further than they did (in addition to not having a serviceable holding striker to fill-in for injury-prone Altidore on the roster). In 2014, a 75% fit Donovan was a better option as a set-piece specialist over Brad Davis and as an offensive super-sub over Chris Wondolowski (and if he took both roles, that leaves a slot for an Altidore replacement). For all of his faults, on a 1v1 breakaway in a World Cup elimination game, who do you want to take the shot, Donovan or Wondo?

Overall, I honestly don't care if a USMNT player is from MLS, Europe, Mexico, etc. as long as it's the best player for a given role on a given team. The objective of the USMNT is to develop national team players (U16 > seniors) and then to put the best team on the field that gives the US the best opportunity to advance in the World Cup, Gold Cup, etc. Instead, we have USSF leadership focused on using the USMNT to market MLS players. The reason that the U-18 and U-20 team does better is that MLS is not interested in the 'kids' yet. So they get to develop and are able to put together a TEAM that can be exicting and has the opportunity to advance without intrusion from MLS. Until the USMNT Senior team is allowed to do the same, they're screwed.

How did Klinsmann's purported anti-MLS bias manifest itself is squad selection? Or any other negative tangible way?

That was an incredibly putrid display over the two games. Just horrific.

If play isn't much, much better in the Gold Cup, I have no problem with ending the Berhalter reign quickly. Having said that, however, yesterday's loss was hardly about either coaching or selection. Players didn't get it done. That goes to the defenders who created chances for Venezuela out of nothing -- which were takne advantage of -- or Paul Arriola who missed at least three goal scoring opportunities.

Sargent playing in neither tournament is very, very strange. Maybe they offered him the U-20 slot and he wasn't interested, and wanted to try to break into the senior team as well? Who knows.

Jurgen called up tons of MLS players. He was panned for continuing to call up Wondo and others.

MLS didn’t like that he pushed players to go overseas and get to the next level among other things.

He suffered from the same problem as Bradley and Arena in terms of settling on the best quality lineup. There still isn’t much difference between the 1st and the 5th player.

Never mind the asterisk that ought to be next to Arena’s record. Losing to basically a USL team made him infamous.

On balance, Bradley was probably even better.

This may be a clue. The Class of 2002 (Donovan, Beasley, Dempsey etc..) were part of the 2010 project. A concerted effort by US Soccer to identify top prospects and funneling them though an in-house academy system with the goal of making a WC semi-final or better. It almost worked, they peaked a bit early (2009) and had a couple missed opportunities at the wrong time in 2010 and 2014.

The media has been talking an awful lot about the lost generation, players born between 90-94 who really haven’t made much of an impact at all.

Dempsey wasn’t part of that project. He was from nowhere in Texas and came through the NCAA. But the Donovan Beasley U20 Team was pretty stacked with the likes of Beckerman and others.
