New video/podcast from Locked on Women's Basketball—I don't think people here will be that shocked by the idea that Sarah Strong will be the best player in women's basketball by then.

I'm shocked. With all the talent out there, and the athletic and talented basketball players with more hype (does anyone have more hype currently in the college game than Juju?), I am not sure Sarah will be THE BEST.

Don't get me wrong - I think she will be terrific, but in 5 years Pheesa will still be in her prime. Maybe they are right and Sarah is on a path to be that great. I'd be thrilled of course... but surprised...

Best player in wbb? If you mean best recent college player , you are right I wouldn’t be shocked. Best player including the WNBA by then, call me doubtful unless A’ja or Stewie or la few others are retired or over their prime.

A second year player in the W can be outstanding butt they still have some proving to do.

I agree. If the timeframe were changed to 10 years, I'd think Juju or Sarah are good possibilities.

Might be too high for Sarah, but you could certainly make a pretty good case for her. By one measure PER (player efficiency rating), Sarah was better than Paige, who was the #1 pick in the WNBA draft.

In general after listening to the entire podcast, I thought they both were pretty good in their assessments of the possible players, potential development, injuries, age etc. I agreed with Hunter more than the other guy, but overall I think they were a clear notch above most of the analysis I hear on the internet.

I don’t see JuJu ever being the best player unless she develops her game to include letting her teammates shoot every once in awhile! She has been put on a path that discourages the full development of her talent by coaches and sycophants who are completely focused on her scoring abilities. She is a good scorer, though not notably efficient. To be honest, I really cannot believe the hype around her. After two seasons her averages are 25.5 ppg (very impressive on the surface) but she takes 20.3 attempts pg and 6 threes per game. Her shooting %s are 41.2 overall and 32.2 on threes. She does shoot a lot of free throws (83%) but many of those are due to ill advised bull rushes to the basket (where the refs often bail her out) when she has open teammates calling for the ball. (Imo, this reluctance to share the ball and play a team game along with her coach’s strange reluctance to promote a more team oriented playing style is the cause of the rash of transfers at the end of last season.) She (JuJu) clearly can pass the ball, she averages 3.4 assists, but all too often it seems as though the game plan is to help JuJu score. Few really good players will want to play on a team that is being coached to promote the stats of one player.

Now for Sarah, she averaged 16.4 ppg, 8.9 boards, and 3.8 assists on 58.6% overall and 38.8% on threes. She does not go the the line much and shoots 74.4% from there. She is a natural and enthusiastic passer, among the best on a team full of good passers, an outstanding rebounder, and is an outstanding team player. For example, on the play where JuJu was unfortunately injured, she had a teammate running to the basket wide open, completly in the clear and rather than simply passing the ball for what would most likely been an uncontested layup, JuJu instead tried to bull her way in and score. There is zero chance that Sarah would have done the same! Sarah would have flipped the ball to her teammate and run to block out for a potential offensive board.

The sad thing is that I believe JuJu could easily be coached to play a more team oriented game. She will likely never have the percentages that Sarah has but she is clearly an exceptional athlete, very smart, and a good person. I just feel that she is being pressured (and coached) to play a style of game that, while it results in lots of points, (and lots of fame and money) will ultimately keep her from developing her full game. I believe the main focus of those around her (perhaps JuJu herself as well) is/was for her to beat Clark’s scoring record. Personally, I didn’t/don’t see that happening anyway but even if she did, Clark would still be the superior basketball player! Clark averaged 8.2 assists to go along with her 28.4 ppg and is widely acknowledged as one of the best passers ever! Her senior year she averaged 31.6 ppg and 8.9 assists! Yes, if JuJu were to play a more team oriented game, her scoring would likely go down (which it will likely have to anyway with the commitments of Jazzy and Saniyah) but she could become a complete player and one that other great players would want to play with!

I’ll take Sarah now in a New York Minute, and have no doubt at all, that my choice will be the same in five years!
