PP downplays offensive changes to ESPN

I believe that personnel use hurt our running game. Specifically, the lack of a rotation at RB. And I would also expect improvement on the offensive line as we only lost one starter and he missed many games.

I agree. Don't really understand why, given McCombs ineffectiveness, Pasqualoni is so reluctant to spread our the carries.

I don't know anybody would expect the terminology to change. A fade route is a fade route. A screen is a screen. If we call better plays and make better plays on the field, we'll have a better offense.

Are you under the impression that Whitmer went into the huddle last year, pointing to his receivers, saying, "Shakim? Go route. Nick? 10 yard square-in. Lyle? play dead. AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD LINE!!! BLOCK THE 300 POUNDER IN FRONT OF YOU!!!!

No, a play is called like this...

Not completely unfounded Mike. See Syracuse, 2004.
That's fair.

All I can say is I guess we'll see how it plays out. I think the necessary fix was made, but that's no guarantee. And if we end up 5-7 again... I'll absolutely call for P's head again. I think we'll be better than that.

I don't care if Weist runs the same offensive sets (save the Wildcat), what I care about is what plays he calls. That's it. I want our O Coordinator to have a gameplan, I want our O Coordinator to find and exploit defensive weaknesses, and I want our O Coordinator who can make adjustments when the defense makes adjustments.

We should assume this change was forced upon him, he is going to go with it as grudgingly as possible and that it's more likely that George's continuing influence will end P's tenure in Storrs than that P is really going to give the new guy a total green light to do whatever he wants on O.

I can't imagine TJ would come here without guarantees written or otherwise that he would be able to implement his offense the way he wants to. He's got his professional reputation to worry about (unlike the two soon-to-be-retirees). I can imagine PP/GDL pretending to buy in to protect George's $272K salary but not really.

If there are issues with this awkward arrangement I hope TJ speaks up before next August.

I got a kick out this 25. Nice one. It's frustrating isn't it? Trying to get people to understand football!! Never mind. Maybe I overstep myself there, whatever.

Deleone is a great football coach of skills and fundamentals, and he's one of the sharpest people around to be able to break down a game or practice film, or pick up tendencies of players by eye, but he's a terrible tactician.

What I'm hoping for, is that Weist, can take the pro-style concepts we've installed into this offense, and use the players we've got to come up with a foundation of offensive tactics, that we can use through the course of the season, to develop game plans, that work to accomplish the strategic goal, of scoring touchdowns, by advancing the ball regularly when we possess it on offense.

For those that care, to really learn about the game of football, and what's happening on the field, and why. Here is a link - to a playbook. Not ours. A HIGH SCHOOL OFFENSE playbook.

No. He won't, because showing enthusiasm for this would to him be being disloyal to Deleone, and that is clearly not going to happen. We should assume this change was forced upon him, he is going to go with it as grudgingly as possible and that it's more likely that George's continuing influence will end P's tenure in Storrs than that P is really going to give the new guy a total green light to do whatever he wants on O.

I don't think there are many head coaches that give "a total green light" to their offensive coordinators. From the various comments P has made about Weist, I think P has accepted the change and is happy enough with Weist. I doubt that Weist would have signed a contract with UConn without having a good handle on how much latitude he will have.

You should spend a few minutes this weekend studying the show that was Syracuse Football at the end of his tenure.

In short. This movie has already been made before. Only it's the same antagonist, and he and his sidekick still have not learned their lessons.

My position on P has evolved over time - at first, thought he'd be a good choice. By last season, I thought he should be fired for his loyalty to GDL. But now that GDL is 90% out of the picture, that's not much of an issue any more. At least, we don't know it to be. This fear that P or GDL is going to override Weist somehow is just unfounded. I think Weist will make all the adjustments that GDL couldn't last year, but we shall see.

Just because P wasn't like Michael Bay in this clip... doesn't particularly concern me. We are overreacting at some pretty innocuous statements, because 5-7, because offseason. If Weist does what I think he can we'll be fine regardless.

How on earth does someone even remotely infer that???

A lot of this fan base should be locked up in the looney bin. I get it, back to back 5-7s will do that. But jeez, let's give Weist a chance here. The terminology is the same so we're doomed? WTF? Just itching to overreact and rehash the same ol Coach P themes...

If you think you are going to win this crowd over with logic and reason, then you've got another thing comin', my friend!!! ;)

Make no doubt about it. While the guy is the OC, the difference will be the passing game and the development thereof. This guy's expertise is just that. It may mean better play calling, it may mean better development of players, it may mean a lot of things, but we will somehow see an improved passing game.

So we have developed a decent QB and he showed me something the last four games. Phillips is good and Davis looks to be a stud. The rest have never seen one play on the field, including the TE's of which I am worried to death about.

The line should improve with one more year of experience, a healthier Bennett and some new blood pushing for playing time.

If we beat Michigan and Maryland, we can lose to everyone else and the players will be forgiven.

Blah Blah Blah Mr Groundskeeper.... WTF are the Woodbury Royals? Ansonia would most assuredly clock them by 60 and have the Cochran Rule by mid 3rd qtr

.-.
272K for GDL...that's the first time I thought about his salary instead of his offensive contribution and I almost puked up the shrimp and pasta that I just ate for dinner.

I would like to know specifically who Weist will be communicating with upstairs during the games. Where will GDL be and what role beyond preparation and blocking assignments will he have on gameday.

Why does it matter which guy runs into a wall?

You guys are insane if you think that two sentence answer is downplaying any offensive changes. Last time I checked the majority of the offense is back, no? Starting QB? RBs? O-line?

Weist will implement what he wants to do. Reading into the two sentences that pasqualoni said and getting your subject title is first dumb and two just looking for something bad because P is still the coach. Do us all a favor and let the team play a couple games before you start pissing on them. All of you are clowns.

I could be wrong but I personally think P wants people to believe that if we do improve considerably on offense it won't be because GDL got demoted.

.-.
If there are major changes in the offense we aren't going to know about them until the season starts, P doesn't give anything away to the press.

It's very hard to believe Weist is going to arrive here and not change anything, you a have to be a miserable pessimist to believe that. I'm expecting a huge improvement.

It sounds like that to me. A real coach would have said that last year's offense was unacceptable.

Don't know where to begin here.

First, it is NOT a given that Weist will "implement what he wants to do." PP/GDL have a track record of pretending to accept change but then going back to the way they were doing them when nobody was looking. The only thing new in this dynamic is an "outsider" was brought in who in theory in the organizational chart is between PP & GDL. God bless TJ for accepting THAT challenge. I hope he had a good agent.

If you had the 110th offense in the country, would you be using the words "minimal" and "that type of stuff has not really changed" when asked if your offense was going to get better? a good followup to that question would have been "well if you're not changing that much, why is your offense going to be better.

Yes, the majority here belive P should not be the coach. Unfortunately Herbst/trustees (McHugh) didn't have the stones to cut the cord. Warde, who I suspect wanted to, has done the next best thing.

And finally, I don't need to see a "couple of games" in 2013 to make the judgement PP was a horrendous hire. The last two years have been quite enough, thank you.

: What do you expect transition-wise with a new coordinator [T.J. Weist] this spring? Do you expect to have the whole offense installed by the end of the spring or does that process take a bit longer?

PP: I expect it to go pretty smoothly. We're learning our offensive terminology and that type of stuff has not really changed, so there's going to be somewhat of a transition, but I hope it would be minimal and that we'd be moving along in that area.

He wasn't asked "if the offense was going to get better" - He answered the specifics of the question as asked... what more do you want from that perspective (in regards to interview - not upcoming year)?

I'm sure I'll be accused of being an "apologista" but hell, can we at least not manufacture the story to fit your narrative. We all want a more productive offense!

You'e not.

Our biggest problem on offense last year was personnel use or misuse or overuse or non-use.

Next came game planing and play calling.

Next came in-game adjustments.

Then came game clock management and use of TOs.

I hope to see a large change in the first three and perhaps even the fourth.
Wow, I agree! Hell must have frozen over last night.

The "narrative" is that despite being forced to hire a new OC PP is trying to give the impression the changes aren't that dramatic. He's not exactly conveying he's embracing change, and has a history of resisting it, i.e putting his relationship with GDL over the best interests of the program. All the man had to do was say "we know we need to improve and I think the changes TJ and I are making will make us more productive than we were last year." But he's incapable of saying that cause he doesn't want to hurt GDL's feelings. In his view, GDL > fan base. Not cool.

I get your point and agree 100% if it was a different question - but you can't create an innuendo thread and rail the man for the way he answered the asked question (guess you can but don't be suprised when others call it out).

i think despite the horrible play-calling, the execution of them were piss poor. Not that's on the players who are running them. I remember running the same plays over and over again in hs, until somebody stopped it. Time to simplifly. Hopefully T.J. is doing that.

If the terminology of Weist's offense is the same as GDL's that is a good thing as you don't have to go back to square one. I would expect to see players more sure of their assignments, playing with more confidence and personel being used more effectively if Weist is running things. If he is undermined by GDL then I hope he first talks to WM and if that fails he puts down the headset and walks out of the stadium.

Sure you can.

1. He's a loser who apparently doesn't get that his program is is big fat bold red down arrow at the moment.

2. He would have kept Dummy DeLeone as OC had big Warde not intervened.

3. Those two factors support his answer to that question.

Have a nice weekend.
