saw yaz at fenway vs sudden sam McDowell

before radar gun; the sudden one threw high heat (in his prime probably threw 100mph)

yaz turned on it over center field wall (power and quicks vs power and quicks) = superhuman

hoops: anything besides chamberlain vs Russell?

Koufax vs mantle in world series

foosball: jim brown vs ?

was a shea to see mr. Robert Gibson, the ultimate heat seeker and was very impressed even though it was vs metsies

superhuman that evening: mr. lou brock went from 1st to 3rd on short passed ball; you never saw quicks of this magnitude-this guy couldn't have been from earth

was at balto memorial stadium to see infinite reflexes as non human vacuum brooks robinson deny base hit after base hit

was at connie mack in philly to witness Richie allen with his 45 oz bat in twilight double dip turn on Koufax and drysdale-just half man half amazing-the 2 homers were absolute frozen ropes that left the yard in split seconds

does hoop provide these glimpses; I'm beginning to think not (except for the kemba ankle cracker on that large pit cat)kemba was clearly in at least 2 places at once

Literally the worst-hitting season in modern baseball history. The NL league-average ERA was under 3 that season. Baseball-reference has some great tools for neutralizing performance. Compare Gibson in '68 to, for example, Pedro in 2000, and you realize that Pedro had a better season.

So, to answer your question, it's because the Cards were held to 0 or 1 runs 35 times that year. That accounts for most of Gibson's losses.

Richie Allen might be the greatest player ever to not Be HOF. Scary is the only way to describe him.
(I don't count the guys being punished.mostly unjustly)
He would rather go to the track than play baseball. Baseball was a job that financed his first love, the ponies.
Mantle vs Koufax is unfair as the Mick was well past his prime.
Koufax couldn't 't find the plate earlier in his career.when he did he was unhitable.
They had to lower the mound because of him and pitching dominance.
The Mick putting one up against the facade in right or into the left center field bleachers over the 467 sign and 10 ft wall. The vendors stopping their hawking when he came to bat. Are preferable than watching injury, age and alcohol diminish his career.
There was no match for the great Jim Brown but the Sam Huff vs Jim Brown hype helped the NFL take off. The NFL is the great hype machine.
Robert aka Bob Gibson with a 1. Nothing ERA.
The greatest sure thing in sports Him vs Fat boy Micky Lolich in the 7th game 1968.
Never bet against a beer drinking fat guy!
Brooks was special. You turn on a fastball and hit it as hard as you can and it's Only one out if your lucky.
Those that have never turned on a fastball don't know the feeling of elation followed by despair when it becomes an out. Crushes your will to play.
