I believe Daddy's point is that coaches had nothing to do with Tina's growth -- it was just a natural progression that would have taken place at any program. Contrary to anyone else's opinion, she was always exactly where she should have been in her growth process it terms of effort and skill.

***
As for the shoulder -- she did have surgery that made a huge difference. The tape was a hot item one year (I recall Walsh-May sporting it) but seems to have fallen out of use?

***
I asked Bob Joyce a question about entry passes that I'll ask the board: How has playing 4 guards and 1 CHANGED the angles of the entry passes - both on making them and defending them? Seems geometry has to play a part in the whole thing and that posts and passers need to adjust.

I would rather have the post recruits (and the current post players) watch a highlight reel of Mama Taj. Taj is not the quickest player around anymore, but her footwork and execution in the post are impeccable.

Trying to emulate Tina would be pretty difficult for a lot of young post players, because Tina's athleticism is off the charts for a 6'4" player. It would still be beneficial to watch just how hard Tina played toward the end of her stay, and granted she did start executing the fundamentals really well, too. But any post player, at any athletic and/or skill level, would benefit more directly if they took lessons from Taj.

Not just footwork, but:
- which way to turn when the defender is here vs. there
- when to roll vs. drop step
- PATIENCE in the post (perhaps Taj's greatest post attribute)
- using both hands well
- using upfakes
- dribbling vs. pivoting first (lots of posts just do the power dribble pointlessly and then pick it up right away, before they've even done much of anything)
- ball position
- anticipating double-teams
- locating open players
- etc.

Tina is a world-class center and in some ways can eat Taj for lunch, but she is young and Taj has had many more years to refine her craft.

No clue? Did you live through it? Don't you remember some of Geno's comments and frustrations throughout?
Or is your memory is clouded?

Here's a related post post:

I also remember what a disappointment Tina was!!! God she was awful her sophmore season, and half way through her Junior year it was only getting worse! Geno just has such a crap record with post players.
I think Stef has had the hardest time adjusting to life without Maya - she isn't getting the service she used to, defenses are focused more on her, and the team as a whole has struggled at times with offensive sets.
The sky is not falling, Stef will continue to improve, and whatever the future holds for her, splinters are not part of it.

hoopsdiva likes this.

Yes Tina was and is great, but she NEVER would have achieved what she did without Geno's constant opportunings and I'll bet she would not be too proud to admit that.
again I have no clue what point you're trying to make! read my comment below.
Geno's frustation doesnt mean that Tina sucked, struggled etc. he just knew that there was more deep down inside of Tina. Even in her "struggling years" she put up good numbers thats why she became UConn's alltime leading scorer (for a year) and rebounder.
Of course she would admit it... thats why she was expecting "a hug"

not sure if your sarcasm button is on BUT I never ever ever would say Geno had nothing to do with Tina's or any of the other players growth. Im the first to suggest that I would send md my daughters to UConn and that the reason for my comment in the original post. (post players or recruits "look at how Tina turned out").... Kia Vaughn, Harper, to name a few IMO could have been better if they went to UConn (water under the bridge). No... I dont know how Tina would have turned out at any other school but at UConn she turned into a World Class Player. She "wanted it" and Geno "fed it" to her.

I didn't "bitch and moan" and I certainly never said that Tina "sucked". Why do you have to misquote me to make your point? I simply stated that Geno deserves a lot of credit for her success. I think that was well documented throughout her career. If I changed "project" to "process" would that make you happy? If so I'll be happy to close this out.

misquote you? please... get off your high horse. "misquote" hahahahaha this isnt an election

Sonny I know Tina's story... Ive followed her since the 10th grade, I know what Geno has done with her. You're preaching to the choir. Again, my whole reason for "recording, editing, and posting" this video.

Nothing you do will make me happy because Im not sad buddy ;)

Tina averaged 13 points and 8 rebounds as a freshman and 14 and 9 as a sophomore. She may have hit her full potential as a junior and senior, but she was hardly a project. She was a work in progress.

Indeed. It was the fact that she was playing pretty well that was holding her back a bit. Geno saw what she could be and rode her relentlessly, while she thought, hey I'm putting up good numbers here! Halfway through her junior season, she had a talk with Chris Dailey, who told her that she'd tell Geno to take it easy on her if the level she was at was as good as she wanted to be. The light came on shortly thereafter, and she's been a premier player in WBB since.

I knew the light came on - it was really obvious, but I didn't know who threw the switch. Thanks.

exactly why Kiah doesnt get that "pat on the back"
I see a lot of parallels between Tina and Kiah. I also think Kiah is just as athletic as Tina. We're just remembering Tina's last year and comparing it to Kiah's first. Just watch.

I read this thread and think Bestarius just nailed it....we remember Tina's last year. I lost a lot of tooth enamel over the number of times Tina got the ball down low and blew it in her first three years.

Tina's rebounding figures as Geno would gladly tell you were padded by her continual rebounding of her own misses on the offensive boards.

I really hope you're right but I suspect that Charles, like Taurasi and Moore , was a once in a lifetime player. Other stars will come along, maybe even next year, but they'll be who they are and Tina Charles will remain the best center to ever play at UConn.

True enough, but at least she was getting them.

Mama Taj for lunch? - is that anything like baba ganoush? And while we're on the subject, I'd like to know what contemptible scoundrel has stolen the cork to my lunch.

Lunch? Where are you? My misery is that I can see the bottom of the Merlot I opened for dinner and my glass is empty. Who cares about the cork?
