When did the definition of "snide" change to "compliment"?I have a couple of observations about Geno's postgame comments:
- On why he recruited Caroline, he made an interesting snide comment which Dom Amore quoted in his article in the Courant: "I don't think it was because of her blazing quickness or ability to get off her feet and play above the rim." After that, he said it was because of her rare mental toughness and her "sneaky" way to get points on the board.
In reference to the Tenn game, Stanford tweeted "a rivalry built on respect," which was viewed as a shot at UConn.a thinly veiled, tough, shot at Muffett in there.
Where was the shot at Muffett?a thinly veiled, tough, shot at Muffett in there.
For convenience
He said: I'm not going to sit up here and cry like some other coaches I won't name have after losing games .... after years of winning.Where was the shot at Muffett?
I took that as a generic comment. He said: I'm not going to sit up here and cry like some other coaches I won't name have after losing games .... after years of winning.
Pretty clear shot at Muffett.
How does one interpret that as a shot at Muffet? I didn't think anything of the comment and took it to mean that no one was going to feel sorry for him and his program for hitting a bit of a skid after decades of dominance. I don't get how one goes from that to "it's a clear shot at Muffet."He said: I'm not going to sit up here and cry like some other coaches I won't name have after losing games .... after years of winning.
Pretty clear shot at Muffett.
I wouldn't call Shea Ralph or Jemelle Elliot world class athletes either. Still, that number has proven that aggressiveness on the court will get you to the top of the mountain.I have a couple of observations about Geno's postgame comments:
Re Caroline, I've read elsewhere that Geno was initially reluctant to offer her a scholarship because of her limitations as a pure athlete. But the experience with Mir, in particular, shows that amazing athleticism isn't a guarantee of success at the elite college level (and it isn't helping Christyn either as much as you would think it should).

- At the beginning of his remarks, somebody asked him what the problem was in the 4th quarter. Channeling his inner Holly, he said "I don't know", and left that hanging in the air for quite a while before he elaborated on it. I took that as, "If I answered your question, I would have to make critical comments about some players who are already well aware of what they didn't accomplish today."
Caroline does have a similarity with two other players who wore #33: that guy who used to play with the Celtics, and Katie Lou Samuelson. None of the three 33's are particularly distinguished among their basketball peers for athleticism, but they do get the job done, often much better than their amazingly athletic peers.
Muffet hasn’t coached in a couple years, so why would he take a shot at her? Geno isn’t the vindictive type to hold any kind of grudge, he’s more of an emotional type to react to a recent comment/event, etc. I think you’re over-analyzing the comment. He said: I'm not going to sit up here and cry like some other coaches I won't name have after losing games .... after years of winning.
Pretty clear shot at Muffett.
Because Muffett literally broke down in tears at press conferences the one year Notre Dame was bad after years of having it her way. I'm not aware of any other coach who fits that description. How does one interpret that as a shot at Muffet? Maybe so. I'll drop it.Muffet hasn’t coached in a couple years, so why would he take a shot at her? Geno isn’t the vindictive type to hold any kind of grudge, he’s more of an emotional type to react to a recent comment/event, etc. I think you’re over-analyzing the comment.
She did make that comment about holding the poll for the Sc-ct game and somehow contorted it into an example of proUConn bias.Muffet hasn’t coached in a couple years, so why would he take a shot at her? I'm with you on this interpretation. His description is too specific plus the "I won't name" part. I don't view his comment as vindictive; it's just kinda part of Geno's straight-shooting verbal style.Because Muffett literally broke down in tears at press conferences the one year Notre Dame was bad after years of having it her way. I'm not aware of any other coach who fits that description.
To make this whole "shot at Muffet" thing work, you have to assume that A) Geno watches the press conferences of other teams that aren't his or playing his to know that Muffet did that at one of her press conferences or someone went out of their way to tell him; B) literally meant cry as opposed to whine/complain/lament; C) was thinking about that one time Muffet cried at one of her press conferences years ago during his own press conference after his team just lost a hard fought game against a top 10 team. Seems like a stretch. Plenty of coaches of good teams have complained or were pissed minutes after a tough loss, and that's basically how I took Geno's comments. I'd be in favor of doing away with all press access to coaches and players other than at specific events that way we can avoid such controversies.Because Muffett literally broke down in tears at press conferences the one year Notre Dame was bad after years of having it her way. No, Geno didn't have to be at the press conference because it wasn't at a press conference it was during a game . It's not as if the GIF isn't readily available all over the interwebs . Yes she literally was crying.
