Portland Trailblazers draft of 7ft Chinese player has to have fans scratching their heads. Didn't they just draft Donavan Clingham last year? What does this pick portend for DC? Are they considering moving DC, are they already disappointed with him? Draft prognosticators had him slated to be picked in either 2nd or 3rd round. Interesting, if not confusing thoughts.

When they drafted Clingan I assumed their plan was to move Ayton within 2 years

Then they traded for Jrue Holiday. That's a clear "win now" move for a team that isn't ready to win now. So now I feel like they might keep Ayton a little longer to maximize Jrue's time? It's a mess

I don't think even they know what they're doing

A combination of Holiday and DC allows for a potentially monster defense. I think you really need a monster perimeter guy and a monster center to come close to team defensive potential. Our ‘24 team had dropped to like 45 in Kenpom defense until we had both DC and SC in the floor at full health.
Now, I get that there are a lot of really good defensive teams in the west, and that DC has to improve a lot on offense. I can’t see them moving away from DC after one year.

I think Holiday is more about a veteran presence and helping them learn to win while also clamping up and ridding them of Simons’ contract.

The Chinese center is intriguing but definitely not a traditional pick. Clingan’s offense isn’t exactly Kareem or Wilt, so maybe they think they can play together. Maybe the Chinese kid isn’t ready yet for another 2-3 years.

Toumani Camara was 2nd team All-D and Avdija is a positive on that side of the ball as well. They clearly have a plan there and won't be getting rid of DC. Yang is likely spending time in G league this year as he acclimates to the NBA and RW3 is broken, so the logjam at center is less than it appears.

You are forgetting Portland's best defender in Camara.

Holiday, DC and Camara is almost unfair defensively.

Yang is a bit of a project. He has potential but he's not taking DC's spot. But he might bring a lot of eye-balls and jersey sales from China which could be good for selling the team.

Who is this Donavan Clingham guy? No respect I tell ya.

I mean, this wasnt exactly '83 or "96 class.
Might as well just F around

I don't think this guy is expected to be a factor right away.

Seems like a lot of teams are toying with the idea of going back to the double-big era. Or at least having the flexibility to deploy it situationally.

I think Portland is sneaky the biggest mess of a front office in the league that said at least we get a sick nickname Cling-Yang
They definitely are and it probably has a lot to do with it still being owned by Paul Allen. It's been a similar mess in New Orleans since the owner passed away years ago. Luckily Portland is in the process of being sold by Allen's estate, which took years to get to this point so I think it will get better in 3-5 years time but for now the franchise is in total limbo.

You must post a tweet about that or else it isn’t true. Or are you in off-season mode?
Off season. I actually deleted it - find Twitter to be too much content and mentally water logging and warping.

It took me about 10 years of correcting my mom to finally get her to “Gampel” from “Gamble”. Unless she was just a fan of Phil.
Or maybe she always put money on the games?
