Poor fan showing at Gampel | The Boneyard

Poor fan showing at Gampel

There have been empty seats in the lower bowl all season. A ton of those are available on the secondary market and don’t sell.

And I love the atmosphere and volume at Gampel but I have to admit it’s down a bit this year.

I think the renovations plus associated increase in prices have exacerbated the “wine and cheese” rich guy problem. Too many people buying those seats only because it’s the trendy thing to do and a status symbol.

It’s brutal this season. The student section that’s across from the main student section is a big issue. Those should be released at face value to other fans that would actually go and cheer and stay the whole game.
Agree with the poster above I no longer have season tickets because of where I live (2 hrs away) but I look at secondary market most games to see if making the trip makes sense. This game would’ve been 100 bucks a pop for a mediocre seat yet it seemed like the place was half full. Makes no sense.

Funny choice of words. I won’t post the link because Hurley is cursing and we get censored on here more than North Korea but he literally said, “Going to a game is not a social event.”
If it wasn’t a social event, they wouldn’t leave at halftime to get in line at Ted’s. We’ve been arrogant and spoiled as a fanbase, the student body takes that to the next level.

They don’t know what it’s like to watch Terry Larrier go 0-22 from the field as we lose to Yale.

.-.
The university and AD have to change something up because our home court advantage is all but gone. Gampel and PBA should be madhouses every game and we shouldn’t need Paul Wetteman to hype up the crowd down the stretch.

This team is just not fun to watch. That doesn’t mean they aren’t great and don’t win, but they don’t fast break, dunk or go on big runs. Every game they’re on the edge of breaking it open and they give up a three or an easy bucket and you can feel the crowd exhale.

Are they even going to Ted’s anymore? Half-joking. But it’s a fanbase full of the top 10% of CT high schoolers. Not sure they do anything but study lol

Don’t rope Hartford into this. They’ve been the better home court for 5+ years now.

Yea there’s definitely a culture shift with the academics being more competitive. I’ve also seen numbers around less and less kids are playing and watching sports these days.
Obviously not a true representation of the whole but the UConn instagram account will interview and do trivia with students now and then. It’s embarrassing some of the stuff they post. Majority of the people posted seem like they barely know anything about the current team let alone the history of the program.

Academics aren’t inherently better they’re just grabbing more international and out of state students because it’s more profitable. These kids don’t care about UConn athletics.

This is deflection by Dan.

Georgetown stinks. It's 8pm on Valentine's Day. Outside of St. John's and Nova, the league is not good this year and doesn't move the needle.

When we played a very good team, Arizona, it was a great crowd. The crowds in Boston and NYC were pretty great.

This is a problem nationwide unless it's an elite matchup.

Students are entitled and don’t care. It’s a social event for them.
Exact reason why we don't get into a power conference. Culture. Students in the B10 & SEC breath their programs. The NE is latdeda.

There are also 50 inch HD TV's these days for 200 bucks.

Pitiful showing tonight. The student overflow section should be sold as regular seats. For a Saturday night, I was shocked how empty it was. What will Wednesday bring? Unfortunately probably a worse turnout than tonight.

My wife said much the same as she nearly fell off her seat when Demary made the spectacular pass to Ball for our first fastbreak basket of the year.

She went on to reminisce about how we once used the PnR to get multiple alley oop dunks per game as recently as last year.

Another observation was how the opponents are easily able to penetrate our defense and drive for layups and dunks, and get the "and ones", while our guys just dribble the clock down and force up shots that too often are taken late in the clock with no one in position for a rebound.

We watched other games this week and marveled at how easily the defense played by a bunch of farm boys from Wisconsin shut down a big, athletic, MSU team. We wonder if any effort is made to school our players in shutting down other offenses.

Final observation. Nothing has changed much from last year so maybe the coaching staff needs to look in the mirror for answers.

Agreed. Every time it seems we get some momentum Hurley wants fans to stand up. We do and the place is rocking but then they give up a 3 pointer or easy bucket. Has happened all year long. Get some stops in a row that would help.

Also, it seems the lower bowl has become rich people who have tickets not "real" fans who have been going for years or decades. They stand but don't cheer or yell. My take is they need rich people to pay for the high-priced tickets now. We used to have 4 tickets but had to cut back to 2. Its a lot of money especially for season tickets.

So I was at the game, and afterward walked around campus. The place was absolutely dead on a Saturday. I took a drive through Hunting Lodge. Nothing. Nothing going at all.

After the game, I tried to get a UConn chant going, and nothing happened.

Are the kids alright? What the is going on?

Is there a certain timeframe in which if student tickets arent claimed they open it to the public for a reasonable price?

It feels like every time the crowd has actually rose to the moment this year, the opposing team would immediately hit a silencer three or draw a foul. It’s like a hex
