Point Guard Situaton

Yup, he went to town on the WCC, inclusive of Gonzaga. He struggles against athletic teams.

It's too bad our entire schedule wasn't Gonzaga & Nolan Hickman.

I'm not quite sure how to say this again... the stats I just listed are from legitimate competition. Physical, P4/5 teams. He didn't struggle. He averaged almost 20 a game on decent shooting as a sophomore.

I think it’s as important to watch the tape on him against athletic teams, in particular defensively. Throw on the GC game and give it a look. If we were gonna count on a guy to light it up offensively to make up for the defensive liability, would have been better than a 6’1” full season 37% shooter last year. He’s shooting 37% from the field this year too, so kinda thematic. People like to bank on his frosh year, but he shot 42% that year. Sometimes a guy develops, sometimes teams get tape on a guy and find their weaknesses.

We are seeing this differently and that’s ok.

Given the fact that Hass will probably be on some kind of minutes restriction due to his injury/physical condition for tonight's game- I think Aidan and/or Ahmad could match up pretty well(defensively) with Ashworth-- size- wise and speed-wise. Our other guys have to take care of their own responsibilities .

Contrarian view for sure but will have a huge impact on whether we can take the mojo out of the $1 beer night crowd in Omaha tonight. 2 out of 3 for Marq/St Johns/Creighton games is a good result for UConn given our roster challenges.

And the other option is moving McNeeley over and kind of going a little bit positionless and just playing a bigger lineup. I guess if you’re gonna turn the ball over anyway, maybe it’s better to be taller.”

Ugh what sh$tshow that our coach is basically saying we do not have any competent players to handle/direct an offense so might as well just have a freshmen small forward do it.

It’s hilarious to me that this is the mindset and we still won’t push Solo to do it, the guy who it’ll actually help the most to do it.

Hurley should play to the crowd and shotgun a beer to open the game and crush the can against his forehead. Would be good pub.

Aidan was the PG in his freshman year at St. Mary's. While he didn't play well against us Dan Hurley, in his pregame, talked about how dangerous Aidan was a PNR guy. Think Dan Hurley has been eyeing him since then. Clearly a major miss...
That's the issue. UConn doesn't really tweak or make changes to their offensive sets when Aidan is in the game, at least as far as I can see. I don't see him run the PnR action at UConn all that much.

If this team wants to have a real chance at making noise Hurley needs to change things up. Hass is badly limited for the rest of the season. His minutes need to be significantly reduced. Liam and Solo have to be on the ball, Ahmad needs real minutes, and Tarris needs to be the primary center. Minutes between Tarris and Samson shouldn't be an even split. Tarris is clearly a significantly better player (has been from day 1) than Samson with significant untapped upside. He needs more minutes and we need to get him the ball to keep him engaged.
Why even have him play at all for next couple of games? Rest means rest- zero minutes of playing time- let him heal as much as possible. Team will just have to figure it out in his absence. Any improvement for Hassan will pay benefits in post season.

No, the reason we won’t 3peat is we lost 4 starters to the NBA. Danny should have never uttered 3peat just 2 days after last year’s title.
So true, Danny becomes unhinged with emotion which can be good and both bad. Great coach that has to reign in his verbalization. This for the team and his reputation. Head has got too big with his last bragging to an official of being the best coach etc etc.
He himself admitted he was able to win a NC by backing off the refs. The three peat mantra was nothing but putting a biggrer target on the teams back.
A little bit of humble and respect goes a long way on opponents bullitin board matarial and officials not looking to make the game a bit different.

110% spot on.

For tonight's game. All I want is some combination of Hass/AM/AN to match Ashworth's output with limited turnovers- Then let the other guys perform for 40 minutes and get the W

This is nonsense. There is a 0% chance this fanbase wouldn't attack him the whole offseason if he tried to lower expectations and say we weren't chasing a championship this year

The idea that talk about a 3-peat has anything to do with the team's performance this season is one of the goofiest theories that's come down the pike in recent years. And there have been some doozies. You might as well say they shouldn't have beaten people so badly last year. They're the defending champs, everyone was going to be out for blood.

The team is what it is. Hurley's a confident guy and he had reason to be confident coming into this season. The team has underperformed. Some guys have not made leaps and others are not adjusting well to new roles. It happens. Last year was a freak show. They don't come along all that often.

They're somewhere in the top 10% of D1 basketball teams. They're going to make the tournament. They could crap the bed in the first round and we'll feel like crap or they could get it together and go on a little run and at some point they'll probably lose and we'll feel like crap. In other words it'll be a fairly typical March for an upper echelon college basketball team that doesn't quite get its together. There are worse places to be.

You don’t think talking about your team like it’s the next coming of the Wooden Bruins nonstop doesn’t further highlight UConn as a red circled opponent on schedules? Or amp up teams we play?

You realize Hurley was finding every crumb of motivation he could last year? It’s the oldest trick in the coaching trade. These kids watch social media nonstop, they see it all. He could have played it cooler. I don’t think the preseason hype train did much good for the teams psyche, the fans expectations or keeping opponents less enthralled to take us down.

No. I thought I was pretty clear - I think it's a goofy talking point. If you think St. Johns was more motivated because Hurley mentioned that the goal was a three peat you're certainly entitled to that opinion.

It’s not worth a lot of dialogue but it’s the reason teams like the Pats didn’t say squat in pressers. You don’t give opponents any more motivation than necessary, even 1%.

When is the last time in your sports fan life have you heard a coach talk about 3peating, champion dna, 3 fingering, yada like Dan Hurley? I don’t think I’ve seen it, kind of stuff normally reserved for boxing. It was fun while it lasted as a fan and I enjoyed it at the time.

I think Hurley constantly talking up the dominant back to back, the goal for a three-peat, and wanting to have a dynasty helps make us the story in college basketball. It helps our brand, it helps with recruiting, it helps with everything UConn. I absolutely hate the little engine that could narrative so many people here seem fond of. I want UConn to be the biggest most badarse program in the sport that everyone talks about and wants to be like.

I get that and why I loved it in the moment. But then you’re dealing with refs trying to chop your ego down, opponents fired up and walking around with an even bigger target on your back, kids trying to live up to it when not ready. Comes down on the team. Best tool for recruiting is winning and sending kids to the NBA.

So this is our new 8 man rotation:

Liam / Diarra
Ball
Stew / Ross
Alex
Samson / Reed

I like. Would be great if Nowell could get some run too.

Lappas made a great point that going small with Liam-Ball-Stew-Karaban-Mahaney totally changed our offense. Teams have scouted us and realize that you do not need to guard our 5 men and just drop. You can chase shooters and funnel to the shot blocker. When we went small, Kalk could not play goalie anymore and it forced them to change their D. Gave Liam much more room to work and opened up the lane.

This rotation can lead us to glory

Liam 20 / Diarra 20
Ball 30 / Mahaney 10
Stew 20 / Ross 10 / Liam 10
Alex 30 / Stew 10
Samson 20 / Reed 20

30: Liam / Ball / Stew / Alex
20: Diarra / Samson / Reed
10: Mahaney / Ross

I don't know if we're going to see Diarra again this year.

They did just fine tonight without Hass at the point. I hope that this was a revelation to Coach Dan.

If I could like this post more than once I would!

Does anyone else think that Solo slips and falls a lot? I was watching the replay of this game and the first thing I saw was Solo falling to the floor after chasing Green through a screen. I have noticed this in other games as well.
