Recording a podcast tomorrow with the GM of XL Center. Anyone have any questions about future of sports/events and XL Center?

Wish they would tear it down and rebuild it with private money, but that isn't happening in this climate

Honestly not worth the money for UConn hockey, a few UConn bb games a year and the Wolfpack. It’s a money pit and any updates will only prove to be bandaids. What is the purpose of the improvements? To make the experience better and draw new fans or make it better for those that already come to games? I doubt the former would ever happen, even if the upgrades are amazing. What is the end goal of spending all of this money?

The Connecticut athletic department is running a $40 million plus deficit, in part due to the monies it pays for playing at the XL. Some have commented that the game lease fees Connecticut pays obscures lack of profitability of the XL Center and creates an unrealistic losses to the programs that play there. Would you be willing to offer games to UConn where you simply split the profits from each game?

Depends if it was in the upper or lower deck?

That can happen in major cities, Boston, New York, LA. It doesn’t happen in mid-tier ones unless the public sector is part of the deal. These are effectively public facilities designed to encourage other economic investment and activity large and small. Ask restaurant owners what their business is on game nights vs non-game nights for example. These facilities were built all over the country in the 1960-80 period. Some worked out some didn’t. Many are in need of major reinvestment having reached the end of their useful life.
