The pitch of the stands? Really? Really?

Funny. Butch Davis might be a corner cutter in recruiting, but he's a hell of a football coach, and a football guy. After the North Carolina game at home a few seasons ago, he and Dave Wannstache, both guys who coached with JJ together in Miami and Dallas and are good friends, talked about playing at UConn, and I can tell you, that both them, basically described being at Rentschler as feeling like the fans are right on top of you.

Rentschler field, is a very, very nice home field.

That's because UConn's fans actually are quite close to the field of play, and The Rent does not have a huge amount of sideline compared with a great many BCS stadiums. Yes, it enables association football (soccer) and rugby football games to be played. However, that won't stop some people from finding fault with the Huskies' excellent, currently perfect sized stadium.

That's because UConn's fans actually are quite close to the field of play, and The Rent does not have a huge amount of sideline compared with a great many BCS stadiums. Yes, it enables association football (soccer) and rugby football games to be played. However, that won't stop some people from finding fault with the Huskies' excellent, currently perfect sized stadium.

When you're on the visitor sideline at the field level and turn around and look, up, the stands, and the tower are imposing. Every time a visiting player comes off the field, and looks up, that's what they're looking at and are not very far away from. Field level I believe is 25 feet below ground level, and the tower is how many floors above ground? when you stand on that sideline and look up, you see the two decks of bleachers right behind the bench, and it feels like you're standing next to a 10 story building that's an entire city block wide, and you're looking straight up from the sidewalk, becuase that tower is close to the field.

It's a small stadium by NCAA 1-A comparison aroudn the country, but it's a damn good football facility. If they ever put the third level up behind the home sideline, it will be one of the toughest venues for a visitor to play in the country.

I'm 100% sure that the original plans and foundation for the 50k capacity involve a third tier on the home sideline. I'm about 90% sure that the design was for the third tier to overhang the second level slightly. The open ends of the stadium give a distinct wind and weather directional home field advantage. Building that third tier, with the crowd noise reflecting down and amplified on that visitor sideline, bouncing off the tower, would make it even louder for visiting teams.

The stadium, visually, acoustically, was very, very well designed.
