Some old pics from 1988, when Gampel was under construction, the Grad Field (the open space between Gampel and the Library) existed, and the Grad Dorms were grad dorms.

Gampel (still under construction) and Memorial Football Field as seen from the Grad Dorms where I lived, it was an easy walk from there to the doors of Gampel for the many games I got to see.

I had a thick set of hair then, now my head looks like Gampel's dome

Does anyone remember how they settled on the name Gampel? Basically what were the circumstances behind the donation?

“The lead private donor for the Sports Center Complex was Harry A. Gampel, a 1943 UConn Business School graduate, whose $1 million gift was the largest private contribution to UConn at that time, and the school gave him naming rights in perpetuity to the basketball arena.”

That is the worst story on how it got named. Wow that sucks lol Was hoping thered be some great Uconn Alum that did some great things in the state for basketball or sports in general. I guess its better than some corporate name like The Hartford Pavilion. lol
