Awesome photos. The celebration at the Hyatt was absolutely fantastic. I looked back through your pics from Houston and the one of Calhoun heading up the escalator at the end of the night is fantastic. I must have been standing right next to you in the lobby of the JW Marriott and that moment is permanently burned into my brain. Watching Calhoun ascend up the escalator with the crowd cheering was special.
(ps. even though we don't take escalators any more it was cool when Calhoun did)
I was at the bar. Charles Barkley was catching some heat from a fan about his Kentucky pick. He took his jacket off and was ready to go at it. The best part of the night was that my friend's 21-year old son did shots with Sir Charles who bought shots for every one at the bar. My opinion of him has mellowed somewhat. Bazz's mother, Kemba's mother and Andre's mother were seated together conversing with Barkley. However, the best part of the night is when Emily Noonan walked by me. We brushed arm hairs.
You can see Barkley's bodyguard lurking over his right shoulder. He was kind enough to share his chicken wings with us Saturday night and was the one who signed the check for all the booze Sir Charles bought everyone. Coach Leitao , Doug Gottleib and others over his right shoulder. The after parties on Sat/Mon were star studded affairs.
Khalid memory: UConn down by like 6 (?) In late season key game at old UPitt arena. Serious abusive trash talk gets thrown at Khalid. He gets animated as does rest of team. Someone (sorry cannot recall but it was a critical & great play...........and UConn scores. Khalid and others make great plays in like 20 seconds and UConn wins by 1 point as time expires.
Then................Khalid runs & jumps on the scorers table and starts yelling at the Pitt fans............they start throwing stuff at him (if I recall someone said even batteries were getting heaved at Khalid). Calhoun jogs over and puts his arms around Khalid's legs to get him off the table and into locker room.
Same thing happened that year at Stanford as well. UConn was ranked #1 but had lost to Syracuse earlier in the week and had no Richard Hamilton for the game. Stanford was ranked #4 and the fans were going crazy in their building.
The fans we're hurling insults at Khalid all game long (some pretty low class as well). All he did was play amazing, score 23 points, 5 assists and 5 steals. W 70-59. And he handled the fans with class.
