Before choosing American Athletic Conference, Big East considered several others including "Great Cities Conference." http://ucf.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1507230

"The "Great Cities Conference" was among the names considered by Big East officials before American Athletic Conference was ultimately chosen as the league's new identity."

"On March 6, the Big East registered three prospective league names: America 12 Conference, All America Conference and Great Cities Conference."

"Five additional names and their acronyms were registered on April 2: United Athletic Conference, American Metro Conference, American Athletic Conference, Metropolitan Collegiate Conference and Big Cities Conference."

GCC would be decent though. Better than AAC.

Youre really splitting hairs if your trying to declare one acronym better than another. Except in a case where they spell something cool, Is there really any difference in a combination 3 or 4 letters?

It's not a big deal but AAC is a terrible acronym... And is just like ACC.

Damn. With Great Cities, we would have had inroads in adding the university of Athens and Constantinople College.

Horrible names, every one.

As a Bearcat fan, I think they should have called it the First Unified Conference or the FUC or the Diverse Intercollegiate Conference or the DIC. So that way UConn and UC fans could go "Man, the DIC really is getting blown out in non-conference play" or "How the hell did we end up in this conference, FUC".

I'm still disappointed the West-East-South United Conference didn't get more consideration. It's amusingly self-depricating as well as accurate - WESUC.
