PGA Tour and LIV Agree to Merger

Feel bad for the guys who stuck around.

Specifically because the PGA seemed to fake a lot of partnership with the guys that stayed to keep them from jumping. Then pulled this off behind their back with not even a heads up to the players. Morikawa tweet of “nice to wake up to news on Twitter”

PGA will PGA

I know Tiger doesn't need the money, but didn't he turn down like half a billion dollars from LIV? lol

In a lot of ways this makes no sense. The PGA Tour, LIV, and DP World tour are creating a 3rd tour ( replacing LIV) , controlled by the PGA Tour that will compete with the current PGA Tour. Current sponsors will have questions.
Because its a for-profit tour, players will be employees of this tour. So on one hand, they will be independent contractors on the current tour and employees on the new one.
Lots of questions.

So sad, PGA looks so weak after this.

Anyways, I wonder who’s next in line to join Rangegoats GC…lamest name ever

Sounds like it's the same as it was 2 years ago.
I mean if they combine elements of the rules between the two. And the purses should be something. I bet the top guys will be more likely to play a higher number of non major tournaments.

I don't think this changes the elevated events concept. So we'll still have the top players teeing it up, this is just adding the top LIV guys to it as well. TBD on whether there's some other exhibition-type concept that will also be implemented.

what happens to LIV now?
is it basically unchanged but now LIV players can play unlimited PGA Tour events
can Rahm now enter a LIV Tour event if he wants to play at VALDERRAMA?
or is LIV dead now?

Jay Monahan is a friend and former classmate of mine. We’ve also done business with each other over the years post-grad school. I have great respect for him. But I’ll just leave this here… He doesn’t come off in a positive light with his complete 180 today. I could say more, but I’ll leave it at that.

A now unbearable Phil Mickelson will be even more unbearable thinking he won the fight. Was a big fan of Phil until he disgracefully threw Tom Watson (captain) under the bus after a Ryder Cup loss. Phil can take a leap...hope he never wins again.

Watson’s captaincy at the 2014 Ryder Cup was a complete debacle — everyone on the us team was pissed at Watson. Should Phil have called him out publically - maybe , maybe not, but Phil spoke for every player on the team.

The quote from Monahan that they'll figure out a way to work the team concept into golf makes me think that LIV is dead after this season and maybe we see "LIV" in some sort of exhibition/WGC-type events (but that's total speculation). LIV was an objectively horrible TV product, so I just can't imagine it surviving in the current form after this merger.

Does this mean Jim Nantz will have to work in the booth with David Feherty?? Just kidding

In my fantasy world you would have Tiger and Jack (who have both been outspoken about LIV) calling a meeting right now with the guys that have been burned by the PGA Tour so your Rory, Rahm, Scottie, Finau's etc.. and gauging the interest in breaking away into something new with the 2 greatest to play the game as spokesmen. As independent contractors these guys are not committed into any longer terms agreements with the PGA...I know with all the money being floated around and everything it would take to get a tour off the ground this would never happen but boy is all the drama fun to think about.

So Norman becomes the pawn. He is the CEO of LIV for now but for some reason Tiger is not a big fan. My guess is in the coming weeks LIV and Norman part ways. In the end LIV was hurting the PGA tour while not getting any of the viewers or interest they needed to have a somewhat successful league. I think that was the driving force one tour was getting decimated and the new tour was not looking viable. Sounds like they both wanted to live.

I accept the criticism of LIV for it's Saudi ties and backing. That is a legit issue. I also accept the criticism of the PGA for essentially not changing for 50 years. No creativity in marketing and the money wasn't what it should be. It was too stodgy and dull, despite great players, courses and personalities.

Let the guys wear shorts and have untucked shirts. Change some events to not follow the Th-Sun four round format. Find some ways to liven things up.

It isn't clear how this is going to work, so I'll reserve judgement.

PGA was the old boys club. Major hypocrites to boot. As if the US doesn't do horrible things on the Saudis level, but it's under-publicized.
See the Michael Hastings 'incident'.

So much for Saudi human rights being an issue. PGA sold their soul to the devil to keep their monopoly in tact. Disgraceful on many levels. Would love to see Tiger, Rory and other big names protest and sit out events or worse.

And it looks like the Saudis will essentially own the PGA tour too, getting the exclusive rights to accept / reject future investments of the joint venture (so they could potentially dilute current stake holders) and exclusive rights to create / establish any future tours.

Just a total embarrassment for the PGA Tour in how they got played and sold out the guys who were loyal to them.

With that said, having competing tours, potentially with some sort of “championship” type team event at the end of the season to declare 1 of the 2 tours a winner would be interesting if done properly, IMO.

But I’m also skeptical that this agreement will be finalized. If I could bet, I’d bet the PGA pulls out.
